Now is the Time (Presidential Primary Season)

Republican LogoThe political scene is heating up with the preparation for the IOWA caucus and the NEW HAMPSHIRE primary (February 1 and February 9 of 2016 respectively).  My FLORIDA primary is Tuesday, March 16, 2016.

The third Republican Candidate Debate will be held in Colorado tomorrow (October 28, 2015).

The Republican party has been dominated by non-politicians Donald Trump and Dr. Ben Carson.  The establishment candidate, JEB Bush, former Governor of Florida, has had a difficult time gaining traction against the unconventional Trump.  Rock star and Florida Senator Marco Rubio has shown surprising strength and seems to have a message of new leadership for a new century.  Carly Fiorino, also a non-politician and former CEO of HP, may be one to watch as she answers all questions in her appearances with specificity and detail and focuses on Hilliary Clinton, the likely Democrat nominee.  Fifteen Republican candidates are still active.  Former Texas governor Rick Perry and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker are the early casualties and have dropped out of the race.

Film at 11, as the saying goes.

Good Tuesday morning Ted. I think this year will be a very interesting year in politics. It will be interesting to see if Trump goes all the way. If he does make it, things just might get shaken up in DC.

This is turning out to be a captivating political season.

I dote on every word uttered by each of them.

Folks have asked me why so many of them run and why for so long?

"Easy", I say.  "It pays very well".

Ted, if I cannot have you as president then my second choice is another rather smart guy named Dr. Ben Carson.

Michael:  Certain parts of DC have already been shaken up!  Clearly the media and the "Donor Class" (as they are beginning to be called) have been surprised and dismayed by Trump's appeal.  He represents a real threat to their power.

Lenn: I find that I have not made up my own mind as to my final choice.  I guess that is a compliment to the excellence and depth of the Republican bench.  But I am trying to find videos of their appearances and trying to get a handle on their stump speeches.  I have been very disappointed in several of the candidates' attempts to distinguish themselves at the expense of other candidates.  Time will tell.  And I will make a choice prior to the Florida primary.

Mike: Thanks for the kind words.  I am somewhat conflicted by my thoughts on Dr Carson.  He is a remarkable human being with an inspiring back story.  In fact, I have been contributing money to his personal foundation for several years (providing scholarship grants and reading opportunities for young people).  But I have not contributed to his campaign.  I am not sure he is tough enough for the job  (or perhaps I am concerned about the impact the sewer of DC may have on him).  The Donald is tough enough and so is Carly.  I am still trying to gather information and will make my decision by January.  I will try to present my ideas in the coming months here on AR and on my own blogs.

Thanks to all for stopping by.

People are sick and tired of politics as usual.  The President and Congress both have dismal approval ratings.  People want a leader who will actually deal with the issues instead of putting their party or the special interest groups above the people.  That is why Trump and Carson are doing so well.

I'm hoping that this 'scary' episode (Trump & Carson) of our political scene will pass along with Halloween. It's not that I'm surprised by the current state of the Republican Party, especially considering the cast of characters in the 2012 primary season, but the fact that Trump is leading at this particular juncture is dumbfounding... if not downright horrifying.

Karl - I do not share your concern.  I am willing to let "We the People" decide.

If President Obama can be elected twice - I do not fear any outcome to come out of the Republican Primary and Caucus process.  If the media can give Hillary a pass on all questions which surround her character, I have a problem with the heightened scrutiny which attach to Republicans.  I will have to rely on the judgment of "We the People".

If the public feels that all of the apples in the barrel are rotten - they have other options.  Mr Trump and Dr Carson are extremely accomplished individuals in their fields.  If you can attack the character of either of them - then I will listen to you.

Many people may not be aware that there is no requirement that a Supreme Court Justice be a judge.  President Eisenhower reached outside the usual suspects to appoint Earl Warren as Chief Justice in 1953.  The republic still stands.

Thanks Rob for your comment.  I like all the feedback I can get.

Oh, I'm not attacking the character of Trump (although there's plenty of material in which to do so), nor Carson. I'm just amused that these two are leading the field considering how little they've actually fleshed out their "vision" for the country beyond superfluous, and mostly unsupported, half-baked "policy" positions. But again, not surprised considering 2012 the Republicans seemed to be seriously considering Bachmann, Perry and Cain.

Anyway, I think the "powers that be" will anoint Rubio or Bush and this craziness will be abated. And let's be honest, if Trump becomes the candidate, it'll be a landslide for Clinton as "The Donald" will find it extraordinarily difficult to get women, Latino or black constituents to vote for him.

What if at least once it would be not women, Latino or blaks, but rather concerned Americans, who might be white, black or Latino, and of both sexes. When we stop the game of pulling the blanket our group way, we would be better citizen... Just a thought

Well OK - that is a legitimate position - but I still disagree.  I am not sure I want to see Donald Trump as my choice (but I will support him is he wins the nomination), but I cannot doubt his competence and his accomplishments in business - I would not underestimate him.  Dr Carson has been in a more limited field (pediatric neurosurgery) but, as I mentioned above, I have been contributing money to his charitable foundation for three years.  He is an honest, sincere and a remarkable person.  I do not Know Mr Trump personally.

The "powers that be" opposed Marco in favor of Charlie Crist in 2010.  Rubio literally ran a sitting governor out of the party to win his Senate seat in 2010.  I do know him personally. I like him a lot and I could support him.  I have stated that I will make a decision after the first of the year.  The Florida primary is in March of 2016.

Ted Baker - it's been months since you wrote this. I was Rubio's supporter when he was running for the Senate. It seems like he was not a particularly good Senator, but isn't it already a tradition for Presidents?

Rubio is surely "presidential", which means he is really a sleek politician. I would have preferred some straight people, like Guliani (I know, I know)... Was quite amazed by Trump, but it is fading now with his cheap shots at Cruz... I think I now like Cruz more and more. Was glad to notice his excellent sense of humor... And no doubt in his character... Big doubt in Rubio... For him it is a career, and hardly anything more. All his cards are right, and he plays them well... but...
