And the Aggravation Continues ....

By
Real Estate Agent with Callaway Henderson Sotheby's International Realty

Yesterday I wrote a blog about having to eat my words regarding a closing date mix-up.  I mentioned that today we would doing the walk through.  The buyer had already driven by the house yesterday just to confirm that the movers were there, and they were. So far, so good.

I anticipated  a quick 15 minute walk through.  I got there shortly before the buyers and began to look through the house and into closets.  I was not happy

There was garbage under the sinks, dirty, disgusting toilet brushes in the bathroom, all sorts of garbage left in the garage; pieces of an entertainment center, pieces of glass shelving, a large glass tabletop, 6 or 7 plastic push toys and tricycles, and of course, the gazillion paint cans that are always left behind.  I was not pleased.

I immediately called the seller's agent who had assured me she was stopping by yesterday to check in.  She said the sellers had assured her he would have everything cleaned out.  To her credit she did say she would have someone come by to get rid of all the excess trash, which the buyers and I then spent an hour hauling outside.

I was pretty surprised when the seller's agent called me back to tell me that the sellers were already in Harrisburg, PA, but they were turning around to come back and get their junk.  Did I feel bad about the fact that Harrisburg,PA is 3 hours away?  Not a bit!!  Am I going to go back later and check on the house and make sure every bit of trash is gone?? You bet!!

Lisa,

Good for you.  Sellers should have to clean up their own mess.

Hi Lisa, and you shouldn't feel bad at all. The buyer's first memories in their new home shouldn't be that of cleaning out someone else's trash.

I am shocked they turned around.  they seem like the type of folks who would leave it to the listing agent. Fustrating!

Eugene~ it can also be difficult and expensive to get rid of trash around here.  Most trash companies will only pick up normal household refuse.  Large plastic toys, construction debris and larger items need to be carted away at the owner's expense or hauled to a community dump (if one is available).  I agree that it should not be the buyers problem or first memory.

They actually turned around?!?!?! Wow! Seems like sellers who are that insensitive don't come back to clean the mess they left! Yeah on you for standing up for your buyers.

Lisa, good job!  I think that the sellers should come back and clean up the mess, if not the listing agent should.  I have taken a pickup load of trash to the landfill just to keep a deal moving forward when I had a seller that didn't have access to a pickup.

Hi Lisa,

You certainly do a great job for your buyers, helping them trash out the house. I've had to hire cleaning people for another agent's buyers when one of my seller left a mess. I was horrified, totally unexpected that day. I decided these were sellers that I never wanted to work with again, they are one of the very few that I never followed up with again.

So, you'd be giddie up lady taking the trash out to the barn? Oh, you got the trash out of the barn. Yikes.

Those doggies sure left a mess. Bummer.

I had to cleanup after my seller clients on the Island once. Dawg gone young pilot couple got in their yer fancy Beamer and spun off. I was about to pull out the Boston creme pies if I knew where they were. Dawg gone cow pokes throwing maneur my way. Pewwwwwie.

Cheers to you lady.

Taking care of their junk is not always a priority - How many sellers have you heard say "but the paint is still good they might want it for touch ups!" Good for you for staying on top of it for your clients.

Lisa, Just keep thinking "It's almost OVER."  Obviously there is some problem with these sellers but they (and their things) will soon be gone.

On our moving day into our home the sellers were still moving out.  they actually ended up leaving their dog overnight.  we almost took it to the spca because we didnt' think they were coming back for their family dog.  The nerve of some people.
