On this day in 1858 the first store in the frontier town opened its doors.  One month later the frontier town was named Denver after Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver to honor the man and also to try to swing favor in their advantage to have the city chosen as the county seat.  Denver was created to serve the miners working in the area.  Gold deposits were running out a year later and many miners headed for the hills.  It wasn't until 1870 that Denver got its first railroad stop and finally overcame its isolation.
