Note To Realtors..."Lay off the cheese during Halloween."

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Compass 0524642

Halloween is a time for kids and grown-ups who want to have some fun. We all know what it includes: costumes, candy, treats, and Facebook postings and maybe a few egged houses. If there's one thing that makes me want to hide as a Realtor it's when agents hand out candy with their business card.

As a Realtor this practice is embarassing. There's nothing innovative, neat or clever about pushing your real estate services to little kids whose parents are standing behind them on Halloween. It's a desperate idea in my opinion.

There's a time to market, and this isn't one of them. I feel the same way about funerals, random door knocking, your best friends wedding, an accident scene, or when you get pulled over by a police officer.

Could not agree more, I think it is not professional since you are not giving the businesscard to anykind of adult directly.

Greg, I don't see a problem if you're going to be handing out full-size candy bars along with your card. Want to make a holiday statement? Go LARGE and set yourself apart from the competition. A micro, mini or fun sized treat won't cut the mustard.

My adult son is visiting today and he asked why I don't pass out a few cards.  I knocked him to the floor.

I host a trick or treat event at my office.  Parents bring kids in droves and always take a calendar for next year with my info on it.  The kids never see it.

, you are so correct about marketing children at your door!  Many comments above have some great ideas... and we do the same at our office, by having clients bring their family to an event we sponsor.  Works much better.

Handing out candy with a business card is probably someone's attempt at being able to take the candy they bought and claim it as a buisness expense.   And you're right, it's hacky.

I have, however, purchased trick-or-treat bags and handed them out at local fall events for my farm area.  That goes over well with the parents.  And it's not happening on Halloween.

I definitely agree with your sentiments about attaching business cards to candy handed out to chldren on Halloween.  I do however like Tammy, Dan and Chris Ann's ideas.

Or . . . that could be viewed as the "TRICK" in the "trick or treat" question kids will ask "Trick or Treat?" . . . you got TRICKED!  LOL
