Halloween 2015 - Pet Safety Tips

Halloween is here. Tonight is a fun and exciting time for kids and their families. However, for your four legged friends, tonight can be dangerous and hazardous to their health. There are a few tips that should be adhered to.

1. Remember that candy, especially chocolate should be avoided. It is toxic and sometimes lethal for some pets if swallowed.

2. Keep your pet indoors.  Costumes may be intimidating to pets. We hate for them to run away after seeing scary sights.

3. Keep black cats indoors all day and night. Pranksters have been known to cause harm to black cats on Halloween night.

4. Keep your dog and cat away from the front door during trick or treat hours. Best to keep them locked up within a confined interior room. Don't give them the opportunity to run out the front door as you are passing out treats to the little and not so little goblins.

5. Pumpkin is known to cause gastrointestinal upset to our little four legged friends. Keep it away from them, especially after Halloween night as many individuals have been known to smash pumpkins on the ground.

6. Keep lit pumpkins away from your pets. There is always the chance of them running toward it, knocking it over and burning themselves in the process.

7. Keep extension cords away from your pet's reach. Avoid the chance of them chewing it and the potential of getting electrocuted.

8. Make sure your pet has an ID or is microchipped if you intend to take them out trick or treating. This is a precaution in case they ran away from your grips and gets lost.

9. If you are going to dress your pet, make sure it is a costume that is safe. You don't want to constrict their movement.

10. Keep candy or food scraps away from your pet if you intend to take them out tonight. One can never be too cautious of items they tend to find on the ground tonight.

Halloween can be fun  for the whole family. However, for your pets it might be more fun if you keep them safe and secure at home.
