Don't Make These 7 Mistakes, Newbie.

Don't Make These Mistakes, Newbie...

Dear Newbie,

Two words that will lead you to happiness and success - Eric Barker.

The word 'YES' leads to HAPPINESS.

The word 'NO' leads to SUCCESS.

Warren Buffet said once, "The difference between the successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say 'NO' to almost everything."

So far, you learned lots of things on 'What To Do' in many posts in this contest. And all good things for sure.

In fact, I learned a lot from these posts. They were not only for newbies. They were equally good for oldies,  too.

We say 'Habits Die Hard', correct? My expeirence says, it is difficult to 'unlearn'. So let's learn something good - on what NOT to do as newbie - right from the beginning. So we do not need to 'unlearn'!

You may have said 'YES' to many things by now.

So what do you want to say 'NO' to, dear newbie?

#1. Do NOT forget the basics of this business.

You may want so many 'tools' for your business. You need only to work on only one thing - lead generation!

There will be many gadgets that you may want!

Focus only on those that will help you with the basic needs of your business.

I'll even say, just to begin with - your smart phone is smart enough to get you going in this business, if you use it right way!

#2. Do NOT work alone.

Have a mentor.

Work with a coach.

What you have learned at License School is not enough to practice real estate.

If not anything else, join a mastermind group.

Keep learning. Getting license is just the beginning.

#3. Do NOT forget people who are close to you.

It all begins with one!

Make sure you continue to stay in touch with YOUR people - people who know you, love you and trust you. They will get the ball rolling.

Just make sure, you do not forget these people who helped you in your business.

Keep in touch with them by sending some item of value, call them frequently, send them Thank You notes.

#4. Do NOT rely on the Magic Pill and Shiny Objects.

You are most likely to get lured by many shiny objects. They will tell you - "Just one sale will cover the cost of the subscription for whole year".

There will be many such 'fatal attraction' that will put you off the course.

Internet is a great tool. You can use this tool to your advantage. However, before you invest a dime, make sure you have earned a dollar!

However, Real Estate is a team sports! You have to 'connect' with people and 'contact' them.

The only way this can happen is - you take the initiative.

#5. Do not count the chicken before they are hatched.

You may have a listing on market does not mean it is SOLD and you have commission check in your account.

You may have many buyers and you are showing homes to them, does not mean they bought the home. The money is not in your pocket until CLOSING.

Do not spend money you have never earned.

#6. The most important tip - DO NOT GIVE UP!

The business you are in is a roller-coaster. Emotional roller-coaster, that is.

It's easy to feel that you are on top of the world when things go your way.

It's easy to break down when things do not go your way.

You want to keep cool in ALL circumstances.

Just remember, if your listing did not sell, it is not the end of the world!

Your buyer did not get a home in multiple offers is not your fault!

Work hard and smart to sell that listing or help buyer buy a home.

Just DON'T GIVE UP!

And.....

#7. last but not least -- Do not think ActiveRain is just a blogging platform.

I can go on and on for this one....

However, let me stop here and say:

Be a part of this community and you'll know what you have earned here.

Now that you are in....make sure....

Mike Bjork - indeed we learn a lot from webinars - and we should implement one thing at a time.

And should I say, don't ask me how much I spent on that shiny object!

I've spent (or my wife might say, "wasted", money on those shiny objects too.  Too much to count, I'd say ;)

Plus I liked your - "advice for loan officers, which you live off your purchase transactions, and save your refinance transactions, as refinances come and go with the cycles. "

Kathleen Daniels - I feel we are the target for marketing of those shiny objects...always! Even if they get 0.0001%, they made their money!

So true, it is most difficult to say 'no' to those who are very close to us.

Hi Praful Thakkar!  What a wonderful list and every one of your points are spot-on!  One of your points that jumps out at me is that I don't know what I would do without my coach to hold me accountable!  Some will sign up with one who 'tells' you what to do but, doesn't give you guidance OR have any accountability standards. (Been there, done that!)  With the accountability, I was able to very comfortably increase my sales atronomically!  I am ever so thankful for that!

I love that line about success coming from the word no.  There are a lot of things you have to say no to when you want to run a successful business.  This is a great list.
