Everything I Learned About Real Estate I Learned in Kindergarten

As youngsters, we learned which behaviors would get rewarded and which would get punished - by parents, teachers, coaches... pretty much any adult we came into contact with (yes, I am a middle boomer, and those were the rules in my small town in the late 50's and 60's)

When we reach adulthood, we get to choose the rules we'll live by. Some of us respond by embracing the system we were raised with, some of us change.

I've long been a fan of UU Minister Robert Fulgham's enduring best seller:

All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten

Turns out, his pearls of wisdom work as well in the adult world as they do in the world of little people.

And... as this post points out - they apply quite nicely to the real estate business, too.

So... if you're thinking about buying or selling propery in the Lake Oconee or Madison area, and you are a fan of Fulgham's wisdom - give me a call. We'll play nice together in the sandbox, I'll help you reach your goals, and we may make a friend or two along the way!

Advice For Newbies

Really.  Hmm.  Maybe so.  Let’s look back at those basics:

Sharing.

As in information sharing.  Well, there are some who say share nothing - yeah, some of us who have been in business for a while have heard this "advice" but I believe sharing is good.  Very good.  Please share.  Ask others.  Over time, you'll find you will learn even more when you share. Seek out those who share.

Playing fair.

There will be those who don’t.   I say karma.  It’s a bitch.  And that’s a good thing. You’ll find out.   Sooner.  Or later.   Perhaps more than once.  Don’t be a statistic of that category. And watch that bitch. This is a winning strategy.

Don’t hit people.

Yeah, that can be a bitch too.  But it’s best to be a good person.  For you. For the world.  Really.

Put things back where you found them.

Keys in lockboxes come in mind.  Yeah, and those rogue clients too. Keeping things in order will help you win in this business. People like that. So will you.

Clean up your own mess.

You screw up, take ownership.  Enough said.   Rinse.  Repeat.

Don’t take things that aren’t yours.

Stuff happens.  Be mindful.  It’s that karma thing again.  Really.

Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.

Yeah, that’s a hard one but you know it makes a difference.  You’ll feel better.  The sandbox will be a better place too.

Wash your hands before you eat.

Your competition...okay, that’s a bit snarky...but hey, it’s my kindergarten class...so my rules...so there.

Flush

Yikes!  Need we address this one?  Again…

Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.

Well, the aroma of warm cookies certainly are enticing.  But the most successful of open house events have proper preparation, presentation and pricing in order - yeah, cookies are nice but those three P’s  make a bigger difference.

Live a balanced life.

Here!  Here!

Take a nap every afternoon.

Well, getting enough sleep is never bad.  Beware -- not wise during a listing presentation.

Watch for traffic. Hold hands.

We can achieve so much by working together.

Be in awe of wonder.

The possibilities are endless.  Really.

You can make it happen in real estate.

Remember the basics. Go forth. Prosper.

Jeanne - Thanks for sharing this in a re-blog. Michael has hit the nail on the head, and done an amazing job with this post. What else is there to learn in life?

Troy Erickson there are some who use the "dog eat dog" rules - but that's far less effective in my experience.  In my southern rural market, time and time again I see people stretch harder to make deals work when they like the folks they are negotiating with.

Jeanne,
Thanks for the fun re-post.  Figuring out whose version of “fair,” can be the challenge in real estate.
