What to think about when buying your first house

You're ready to make the move and own your own place! You're excited and probably nervous at the same time. Here are some things to think about so you can be more confident when choosing which house is best for you.

  • School district: If you have kids (or planning on having kids), you might want to do a little research of what school district is the best fit for them.
  • Daily commuting: How far will you have to travel on a daily basis. For example: going to work, buying grocery, Daycare etc.
  • Desirable location: When it comes to owning a house, its good to factor in if the house will be easy to sell in the future. What if your job got relocated and you need to move?
  • Cost of utilities: How much will it cost to keep your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter? The bigger the house, the more energy you will use to keep it cool/warm.
  • House essentials: How old is the furnace, water heater, fuse box, water softener, etc? Are these items up to date? You will need to know how to operate these items or know what purpose it serves.
  • Maintenance: Will you have to do any updating in the near future? For example: Does the roof need to be replace soon? What about the siding or carpets?
  • Style of home: Are going to have an elderly/disable person live with you? A house with a bedroom/bathroom on the main floor is probably more desirable so they don't have to fight the stairs everyday.

Some of these are probably common sense but you'd be surprise what people can forget when they're overwhelm or are too excited. As a Realtor I always make sure that my clients are informed so they can make the best decision for themselves.
