Thanksgiving Fundraiser & Food Drive
When I'm not doing mortgages, I'm almost always involved with planning or participating in & for my meetup group. For those that don't know, meetup.com is a site where you can find people with similar interests, and attend events of almost any type. A little over a year ago, I realized I should probably make some new friends in my new home here in SoCal, and what began as a small group of a few friends playing beach volleyball & doing the occasional happy hour has grown into a nearly 2000 person group with events scheduled for nearly every day of the week.
The group that I organize is called the "Socal 20's and 30's Transplants". While we don't necessarily turn away locals who want to join, we focus on being a community that welcomes people who move to SoCal from other areas, just like I did a little over 2 years ago. Events range from happy hours to sporting events to national park trips, game nights, and everything you can imagine in between. Our goal is to offer a community of comfort, fun, and a warm welcome to people who are new to the area.
Just prior to turning 1 year old, the group hit the 1500 member mark, which is where I considered us "big". 1500 represented the point where I realized we have a lot of strength in numbers. I began to seek sponsorship opportunities (which are coming to fruition as we just got our first major corporate sponsor, with others in the works), and more importantly, I realized we could do A TON of good in the communities we live, work, and play in - just think of what 2000 people making a $5 donation could do for a cause. Or what just 50 people willing to give up an hour or 2 of their time could do for an event that needs volunteer help.
I have a group of 7 assistant organizers, and at our most recent meeting, we decided to do our first volunteer/charity type event this month, with the plan being to champion a different cause each and every month going forward. Why do I bring this to ActiveRain? To humbly ask for help, of course.
Our first Meetup Fundraiser will be a fundraiser & food drive for the Orange County Rescue Mission. OCRM estimates it costs $1.48 for each meal that they prepare for the less fortunate, and with Thanksgiving and other holidays right around the corner, what better cause could we support? If our group can help make the holidays a little bit brighter for someone else, I'm all in! I write this to spread awareness, and also in case anyone out there in AR land or anywhere else would like to contribute to help make our first group fundraiser a success. We're accepting paypal donations to our group paypal account thru Tuesday, 11/24/15, with the paypal account firstname.lastname@example.org. (If you do wish to contribute, please do so as "friend/family" to avoid us incurring a paypal charge)
While it would be amazing to see financial contributions (obviously nothing is too small...even $1.48 ensures someone out there gets a Thanksgiving meal), spreading the word is just as important. With this being our group's first venture into fundraising and supporting worthy local causes, I'm not sure what level of success to expect, but I know that when it comes to a good cause, anything is better than nothing. So if you're in the SoCal area (or even if you're not) it would be greatly appreciated if you could help us spread the word by sharing the event page (or this post). And if you're a SoCal Transplant in your 20's or 30's, come check out our group - it's a really special group of amazing people from countless different places & backgrounds all getting together to have fun & make new friends.
On top of our fundraiser, our group will also have a couple "donation" events throughout the month, in which we'll open the door to members to bring non-perishable food items that contribute to local food banks. Tis the season when the need is greatest, so hopefully between our fundraiser & food drive, we'll be able to add a few extra smiles to the world for the holidays.
As I mentioned earlier, we're looking into a lot of opportunities to help worthy causes, especially those local to us here in SoCal - if you'd like to get involved or suggest a cause for us to support on our monthly calendar, we can be contacted through the same email we use for paypal - email@example.com
