Before and after Thanksgiving are usually some of the busiest days of the year. With friends, family and relatives coming over for the occasion, your kitchen will surely be running a heavy workload during these days. Now is a good time to inspect everything about your kitchen to make sure it is ready for the upcoming catastrophic holidays.

Avoid having your local appliance repair man or the firemen as guests for Thanksgiving by making sure that all of your appliances are working safely and properly. Here is a checklist of things to check so that you'll have a safe and fun Thanksgiving celebration.

1. Read your manuals. Make sure you are using the right appliance for your specific needs. The manual has specific instructions on how to use each appliance properly and what to avoid. The manuals also have information on proper cleaning procedures and maintenance. You'll save yourself the trouble of calling the repairman if you only read your appliance manuals. If your appliance doesn't come with a manual, you can search for it online.

2. Prepare your oven. Your oven is probably the most important kitchen appliance that you will need for Thanksgiving. It is the highlight of your kitchen so most people are tempted to run the self-clean cycle the day before the occasion. Don't. Running the self-clean function can trigger a breakdown because it requires your oven to get very hot. Run the clean cycle two or three weeks before the holidays.

3. Don't store food in the oven. Whether it's food remnants or meat being marinated, don't leave anything inside your oven. You have your fridge for storage purposes.

4. Clean your fridge. Remove food remnants that have been stocked in the fridge for more than a week. Wipe down the refrigerator and make room for new food. Do not fill your fridge with food because the cold air flow will get blocked if you have too much stuff in there. Do not forget to clean the coils as well.

5. Check your burners. Your burners will surely be working double time during the holiday season. Gently clean the burners while making sure not to knock the pilots out of whack. Rinse with soap and water, taking care to prevent the soapy water from clogging the small holes.
