Wordless Wednesday - Massive Sink Hole in Meridian MS

By
Real Estate Agent with Front Gate Real Estate Broker 11085

A monstrous sink hole appeared in the IHOP Parking Lot in Meridian, Saturday, November 7th, swallowing 15 vehicles. The investigation by OSHA is still underway.

The cavernous sink hole was 360 feet long and 50 feet wide.

You may have seen this on the news, but I wanted to share this clip with my ActiveRain friends. Meridian is located about 80 miles from Brandon MS.

I did see this on the news and I wondered what the folks in the IHOP did when the other side of the sidewalk gave way and the parking lot fell in a hole.

Myrl Jeffcoat & Debbie Laity - Not sure what term describes it better than "sink hole". I believe this was newly developed area; the IHOP had just opened. The news said everyone is "scratching their heads" trying to determine what went wrong.

Sussie Sutton & Tammy Lankford - They were fishing the cars out yesterday. Owners were gathered around so they could get their personal possessions from their vehicles. It's one of the strangest things to happen.

Apparently, there was a large culvert pipe involved.  One news station reported that its collapse, was the cause.

Myrl Jeffcoat - I suspected that, but it wasn't visible in any of the photos. Talk about a major fail!!!

So here's my question...you're ravenous, your order has just arrived and boom, your car ends up in a sinkhole.

Do you go ahead and eat?

The fact that stuff like this is happening more frequently is not good.

And Susan Haughton  If it were me, yes.  Sit down and eat.  It's not like you're going anywhere anytime soon.  Of course, it takes a lot for me to lose my appetite.

Susan Haughton & Chris Ann Cleland - Chris Ann, you crack me up! I would have to go outside to investigate. LOL

I'd only investigate on a full stomach.

Pat, I would think that whatever landfill was put in there if it was new may be some of what caused this problem!

Unbelievable and truly a miracle that no one was injured--honestly, that is amazing.

Good morning Pat. I saw it on the news a couple of times, that's crazy. Hard to believe that it wasn't a problem before this event.

So unfortunate for that business and those patrons. You would hope there's some sort of insurance coverage here, but not sure. Do sinkholes fall under an act of God?

Joe Petrowsky - the "sink hole" was newly constructed and paved earth. My understanding is there was some kind of culvert failure, although difficult to see the existence of the culvert from video footage.

Kim Gaston - I suspect this is going to be costly for the developers as a major construction flaw.

Absolutely amazing Pat Starnes.   It is scary how antiquated some of our infrastructure is but this looks fairly new which makes it even more scary.

That is just terrible. It makes one think where will this happen next. I have seen some small one fall out but nothing like this.

One of the scariest thing Pat Starnes  . We've had a few of these in Florida and this instance you show is frightening, yet thank goodness it didn't swallow up a home with people in it as has happened here in my state.

Lynn Pineda - Seriously? What was the reason for the sink holes in Florida? Massive erosion or some other cause?

Aloha Pat, it was fairly clear to me, after watching the video, that there was an underground culvert beneath the parking lot that ran precisely were the collapse was. Not too much of a mystery but I would never underestimate the ridiculousness of the media to be a ratings digger. It's like a gold digger only worse, a hui hou.

Yes Pat Starnes it happened. I can't remember exactly what city, near Tampa I think.  A man was in his bedroom on his bed and the home gave way swallowing him up in the sink hole.  His brother was near by had jumped into the hole trying to find him and he never could. It was truly a horrific and awful event for that family; beyond imagineable.

Lynn Pineda - how tragic! We hear of these things happening occasionally, but imagine them occurring near a bluff or similar location where people have had warning signs.
