Hi Craig Daniels I love your wallpaper.... it's precious and the love radiates.... as I continued to scroll down and read each section ( I haven't upgraded to windows 10 because I am very comfortable with windows 8 and, oh, how I hate to disrupt what doesn't need disrupting....yet.... and then the info was beyond my pay grade!!!

Great desktop!  Thanks for sharing not only the wallpaper but the setup as well.

I've been using Notepad++ for close to 10 years now.  Absolutely love it!  Much better than other word processing tools (or WYSIWYG website design tools like 1st Page) for simple web edits.  Used it to audit and write MANY lines of code over the years.

A big fan of FileZilla too.  Free, open source and supports FTPS and SCP (secure file transfer protocols).  I've also been using that for 10 years or so.  Great for one off manual file transfers, love WinSCP for automated transfers.  Used and brought in both of those at multiple Fortune 100 companies.

Picasa is nice, but InfranView is my favorite of the two.  Have you tried Gimp?  It's basically a free and open source version of Photoshop.  Just as powerful and has plugins too.

I hadn't heard of Chrome Remote Desktop, I'll have to add that to my list.  I've used "GoToMyPC" in the past as well as VNC and RDP.  All of which are cross platform Windows/Mac/Linux.

I've been a fan of "Snag-it" in the corporate world for screen capture.  Currently using Windows 8's free "Snipping Tool" which is effective for the basics, but not as integrated as Snag-It is with stuff like taking over the print screen button.  Hadn't heard of Screencast-o-matic before.  Going to have to add that to my memory banks.

Hi Craig, I too am a Windows guy but are sticking with version 7 for now. Your wallpaper is really nice, you have cute son named Brendan.

You are a brave man Craig for jumping into Windows 10.  I keep getting notified but my hubby (who is an IT guy) says Just Say NO.  He has billed a lot of time this past month at his clients who just click on the upgrade and expect everything to remain the same.  

I love how tidy your desktop is and your son is just such a handsome little fellow.

Thx for the tour.  I used to have my bar on the left for the same reason.  Now, I hit something and it went back to the bottom and I forget how to change it back LOL.

LOL..I finally just figured it out.  They are now back on the left.  Finally!

So much great information Craig!  I'll be sticking with Windows 7 until I have no other option!  I'm in no hurry to switch over. Glad to hear you like 10, I've heard so many people complaining about it. You give me hope that it won't be such a big deal to upgrade when the time comes.

I have a windows 7 that I absolutely love and it is starting to cause me some concern. I will have to upgrade sooner or later but I am dreading it. I detest windows 8 and this computer I am using has been upgraded to W-10. I only use it when I have to.

Craig  - thanks for this informative post. I want to check out windows 10, but wnat to make sure it will work the our MLS and other often used program.

Craig Daniels well, your conetest post has so many lessons in it. One that I immediately adopted is - auto-hide of task bar along with task bar on left side if the screen - and I see the immediate difference!

Like many other posts of yours, this is saved, too.

There are plenty of little miscellaneous files however that we don't have time to make project folders for every little thing. When it is time to cleanup the desktop, if it is truly a temp/garbage file, I drag it into the recycle bin

Interesting timing as I'm going to need a new laptop very soon and see there are quite a few windows 8.0 and some windows 10.0 home versions available. I don't want a "home" model since they don't seem to get the same heavy duty updates that the "business" version. But now that I read the above, maybe the 10.0 "home" is fine.

I'll have to bookmark this and read in more detail!

Craig Daniels I upgraded to Windows 10 when it first became available. I had a glitch and had to do a repair install. Since then it has been working great.I don't like that every time I do a program update, Windows 10 gives me a hassle about not running the update. I can in most cases reboot and the update will run okay after that.

Use Windows 7 myself. Have a laptop with Windows 8.1. Hate being a beta tester for Microsoft so think I will stay where I am till necessary to update.

Wow, I have got to get my desktop organized. Maybe it will be easier just to pick up something new on Black Friday or Cyber Monday!

As usual - an amazing lesson. I have become much more organized with my desktop in the past 2 years and it helps so much. What a difference!  And, I could have guessed your adorable son would be a part of your wallpaper. 

Whooo!  I didn't know I could drag icons to the bar and clean up my space!  I now have a beautifully clean and uncluttered work space!  Thanks for the tips, and don't be a stranger to AR!
