Grand Junction School District #51 broke ground on a new high school November 17, 2015. The new R-5 High School will be at 22nd St. and Grand Avenue. The school is currently located on 7th and Grand Ave. in a building that over 90 years old.
The new building will also include the Opportunity Center that will help meet the needs of District 51 students who learn best in an alternative way. R-5 principal Donald Trujillo said they will have learning studios. As we have it in our mind, it will be defined with integrated technology and flexible spacing. The new and improved school was based off not only the administration's needs, but also the needs of the students.
Trujillo has involved the students in some of the decision making. We have picked out furniture and planned on how many students can fit in each classroom. Students said the new building will make them more excited to go to school and in turn learn to the best of their ability. It is a project students and staff alike say will help them get those 21st century skills so vital for these students to enter the workforce.
The school should be completed by September 2016 at roughly $9.3 million dollars.
