Hunting for Dinner in Rancho Mirage California
We just spent 36 hours, a quick 2-day stay, in the California desert in Rancho Mirage, a little over 2 hours from our Carlsbad home.
With gorgeous fall weather and temps in the low to mid 80s during the day and mid 60s at night, it was wonderful to get away even if only for a short time. We both had some work to take care of while away but somehow it was easier being in a relaxing environment with wonderful views vs. home in the office.

While out for one of several walks at the Westin Mission Hills Resort Villas, we spied this Black-crowned Night Heron out hunting for dinner. We used to see them often at the lake near our home when we lived in White Bear Lake, MN years ago, but I haven't seen one since we have lived in Carlsbad. He, or she, didn't seem the least bothered by our presence...the hunt for dinner was likely of greater concern.

The great white heron (a.k.a. Great Egret), far more common in our area, was fun to see as well. We didn't get to see a successful hunt, however.
