Hunting for Dinner in Rancho Mirage California

We just spent 36 hours, a quick 2-day stay, in the California desert in Rancho Mirage, a little over 2 hours from our Carlsbad home.

With gorgeous fall weather and temps in the low to mid 80s during the day and mid 60s at night, it was wonderful to get away even if only for a short time. We both had some work to take care of while away but somehow it was easier being in a relaxing environment with wonderful views vs. home in the office.

Rancho Mirage views from the Westin Mission Hills

While out for one of several walks at the Westin Mission Hills Resort Villas, we spied this Black-crowned Night Heron out hunting for dinner. We used to see them often at the lake near our home when we lived in White Bear Lake, MN years ago, but I haven't seen one since we have lived in Carlsbad. He, or she, didn't seem the least bothered by our presence...the hunt for dinner was likely of greater concern.

The great white heron (a.k.a. Great Egret), far more common in our area, was fun to see as well. We didn't get to see a successful hunt, however.

Jeff glad the two of you had a chance to sneak away and relax and play! Gorgeous pictures!  How did I not know you lived in MN!!! When was that?  I left MN in 81.

It was great fun to get away, and the weather was spectacular!

Guess I don't talk about it much - maybe it's time for a post. We were in Minneapolis (Circle Pines) for about a year 1987 - 1988, then in Dellwood, a neighborhood in White Bear Lake (St. Paul) 1988 to the end of 1989. We moved back to Boston on New Year's Day 1990!

Your mini-escape to Rancho Mirage sounds like it was a perfect get-away. I'm with you--putting together an offer from a hotel lobby in Hawaii hardly seems like work; uploading a new listing from a hospital bed in Mexico--not quite so nice!

LOL so true. I had to do the same while in Maui a few weeks ago. I didn't complain. As long as it doesn't take too much time...
