Keep Your Pets Safe On Thanksgiving ~ They Can't Eat What We Do!

By

Don't forget to keep your pets safe on Thanksgiving by not feeding them things from our tables/plates that are dangerous to their health... it's easy in the excitement of the holiday to want to share with our four-legged family members, but it's not always a good idea to do so.

Things to avoid feeding to your cats and dogs:

  • Bones: turkey bones can lacerate or obstruct and even puncture your pets' internal organs. Save the bones for the broth.

  • Onions: Onions, scallions and onion powder, found in stuffing and used as a general seasoning, can destroy your dog or cat's red blood cells, which causes anemia.

  • Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins contain a toxin that can cause kidney damage to both dogs and cats.

  • Chocolate: Chocolate can actually be fatal to your dog or cat; so all those sweets must be kept well out of reach.

  • Ham: is a fatty food that will often upset a dog's or cat's stomach as well as cause pancreatitis, vomiting and diarrhea.

  • Sweets: whether it's pecan pie, or pumpkin or apply pie, a tiny bit will probably not do damage, but in general it's best to avoid feeding sugary foods to dogs and cats.

More tips on how to keep your pets safe during the Thanksgiving holiday can be found at the following websites:

And If your pets do happen to ingest any of these foods on Thanksgiving, call your veterinarian as soon as possible. Quick action may prevent more costly and serious complications from developing.

Nina I am not a pet owner, so I was not aware of this.  But it is good to know so if I am ever at someones house who has a pet know not to feed them any of these things.

Good info here. This is my dog's first Thanksgiving since diabetes diagnosis. I just have to make sure my granddaughter doesn't "help" me by trying to feed him!

George Souto ~ or if someone evers brings their dog to your house with them... I hear about a lot of people who "travel" for holidays with their pets.

Gary L. Waters, Broker Owner, Waters Realty of Brevard, LLC ~ good point, Gary... kids have a soft spot for dogs and can sneak something in before you even notice it.

Good afternoon Nina,

I knew of most of them but did not know about ham.

Amazing an old guy can learn new things.

Make yourself a great day.

Rob D. Shepherd ~ Rob, there are lots of people who do have pets and don't know they should be careful feeding their animals with some of these hoiday favorites.

Endre Barath, Jr. ~ thanks, Endre... I loved the picture of the cat at the table. Reminded me of mine. Such great attitude!

Hannah Williams ~ hi Hannah... you lucked out with your Husky eating chocolate and not getting sick. These things do happen. But it's also important to be aware and avoid instances like this as much as possible, as one never knows.

Sally K. & David L. Hanson ~ My cat, Oliver, is also very good about never getting on the table... he sits in a chair at the table like a human guest waiting for his due.

Raymond E. Camp ~ hi Ray, when I started reading about this to write the post, I was surprised about the ham, as well. I suppose if you give a big dog a tiny piece it won't hurt, but certainly not a plateful of leftovers.
