A few weeks ago I watched a post on YouTube titled What Kids Really Want for Christmas and guess what? Black Friday specials were not mentioned, ever. Things can never replaces friendships, experiences or memories which are not only free but their value expands over time.
This list is just the beginning so don't stop here. Brainstorm 100 or 1000 more things to do with your family, your friends or alone. Make this a holiday like no other starting with Black Friday....Ready. Set....
- Put away your cell phone, your computer and electronics of any type. This is family time, your time, time with friends. If you can't put those things away then wait until you can.
- Have breakfast or a hot cup of hot chocolate on the patio even it if means bundling up. Notice the birds singing, the sounds that engulf your world early in the morning. It's part of your life so enjoy it.
- What book can you read as a family or a favorite book you have meant to read. Go to the library to get it. When is the last time you went to the library? I promise you'll find many treasures there
- Make up a board game with your kids and play it or drag out your deck of cards and play solitaire.
- Create a gratitude board or
- Create a vision board or
- Create an accomplishment board
- Declutter a closet and donate the best of the best items to charity (each person is responsible for their own closet)
- Take a walk in your neighborhood. Why did you move there, what do you like best about the neighborhood, how much do you really know about where you live
- Go to an art store, a craft store or a book store and just browse
- Get up an hour earlier than usual and use that time in prayer, meditation or doing what you love most
- Start a holiday journal
- Instead of sending holiday cards send a holiday letter telling the recipient how much you appreciate them and why.
- Invite your best friend(s) over to your house to try a new recipe, have a cup of tea or just a chat
- Schedule a mid-day tea or coffee break to reflect and just BE
- Put up your holiday decorations early and take them down later than usual
- Make a plan to do something you have been meaning to do for a very long time. The time is NOW.
- Make a new recipe that you think you wouldn't like. Surprise yourself.
- Enjoy family movie or picture night - yes, your family photos or movies along with popcorn and candy
- Make a raw dessert
- Keep a promise to yourself, a friend, a family member
- Look for someone who could use your help and help them.
- Walk around your neighborhood and enjoy the holiday lights. If you are brave sing carols for the neighbors.
- Bake a cake or cookies from scratch or better yet make 2 and give one away
- Volunteer your time
- Turn off TV for a day, a week, a month, a year. I know this one is possible.
- Spend time doing something you loved as a child and if you can share it with a child - finger painting, playing marbles or pickup sticks, jump rope, climbing trees
- You know that pen drawer you keep? Take out all of the pens and doodle
- Call someone on the phone (if you have a 'real' phone use that phone and not your cell phone)
- Introduce yourself to a neighbor you haven't met
- Meditate or pray before bedtime as a family
- Do an odd job that you have been putting off
- Smile, often, even if you are alone, share a smile if you are with others
- Plan a vacation/stacation that you will go on in the next 3 months. Pick the date, the place, make a budget, do some research. Be the perfect tourist.
- Go to a nearby park, bring a picnic lunch
- Add a little spontonaiety to the day and do whatever you feel like doing
- Have pancakes and cereal for dinner
- Wear your pajamas all day and take a nap or two or three
- Turn on the holiday music full blast and have a sing-along
- Make homemade dog or kitty treats for you pet or someone elses
- Brainstorm things you can do to love the planet and then start NOW (recycle, use less plastic)
- Make a calendar of free holiday events and attend them with someone
- Make a shopping list supporting small, local businesses whenever possible
- Take a long, luxurious bath
- Lots of free fun happens on Black Friday - check your newspaper for free things to do
- Scale down your holiday list of things to buy, do and make and find the joy in the season
- Go on a bike ride
- Enjoy a campfire in your backyard
- Rearrange the furniture in one room of your house
- Start a jigsaw puzzle (I know you have several packed away)
- Share favorite childhood memories with your family or friends
- Go to a garage sale or two
- Visit a nursing home and spend time with someone who will be alone this holiday season
- Turn on music from your teen years and dance like no one is looking
- Watch the sunset
- Look at the stars and pick out the Big and Little Dippers. See how many more constellations you can find
- Recite a few tongue twisters
- Write a poem or a story. If you are sharing this experience with someone else each person can write a sentence
- Make dinner out of ingredients you already have in your cupboard
- Take a minimun of 10 photographs today (yes, this may involve your cell phone so no cheating like checking email, facebook or texting)
- Make a holiday time capsule for next year - put in it a newpaper article, a photo, a receipt, grocery list, letters to Santa, favorite recipe.....
- Blow bubbles
- Give your pets or plants some extra love and attention
- Take a map of your neighbhorood, zip code, town and with eyes shut point to one place on the map within 5-10 miles of your home. Now go there. Find out all you can about that part of your city.
- Find a book club, meetup or language club to join
- Write thank your notes or send someone a birthday card
- Feed the birds and other wildlife
- Make paper airplanes and see who's design flies the furthest
- Color or draw
- Clean out your drains
- Go to a video store (find one nearby because RedBox is not a video store) and select a video for movie night complete with popcorn and other goodies
- Remain silent all day or for as long as you wish
- Visit a local farm or petting zoo
- Play with your food
- Give you car a good cleaning
- Make a snowman kit and plan a day to make it one
- Go sledding, roller skating or ice skating (but only if it is free)
- Find out what you can do for free in your town and get out and do them
- Be the reason someone else is thankful
- Go to bed early
- Drink more water. Try infused water.
- Give 7-20 second hugs
- Write a letter to Santa (no matter what your age)
- Spend an hour in full procrastination mode and enjoy every minute
- Participate in Small Business Saturday
