Google Might Not be the Next Safari Default Search Engine

Better be optimized for Bing

Google has long been the main focus of SEO for websites as it dominates 67.6% of all domestic searches. But now that Google’s contract with Apple as the default search engine for Safari is ending this year, Bing and Yahoo fights for the coveted and expensive (about 1 billion a year) position. According to Search Engine Land, Bing will most likely take over Google’s spot as Bing already powers searches for Siri.

So what does this mean for you as a real estate agent?

It means that it is time to optimize your website for Bing. Because Google is a much more developed and experienced search engine, its crawler can take on more complexity than Bing’s infant crawler. Therefore here are some tips to help your website become more optimized for Bing:

>Get indexed:  Submit your site to Bing So Bing can crawl the pages of your site. Bing does not update its index as quickly as Google so it will take some time. Of course, be mindful that the volume of pages of your website also factors into the indexation time. However, after 6-8 weeks and you still do not see your website in Bing, then use Fetch as Bingbot  to find out possible problems.

>Must Have Features: According to Bing’s site, here are a few important factors to have:

*Page load time: the faster the better

*Sitemap: Remove unnecessary URLs. Make sure they all look clean.

*Redirects: Only use a 301 permanent redirect. It does not like 302.

*Media: Videos and audios can prevent Bingbot from crawling your site. According to Bing, use “a down-level experience which includes the same content elements and links as your rich version does.”

>Relevant Title Tags: Bing prioritizes title tags more than Google does. Therefore, use relevant keywords in the title tags of all your website pages.

>Use Exact Keywords: As mentioned above, because Bing is young compared to Google, it still places great importance on exact keywords. Your best bet is to use exact words and phrases you want to rank for. WordStream is a great keyword tool for finding optimization.

>Just as Google has added a local business section, Bing places great importance on local listing. (This is especially important for real estate agencies) Enter your business information to Bing Business Portal to build up your local ranking.

It would seem that regardless of google or anyother search engine, realtor should promote themselves the same.  Course that is in a perfect world.  In our world, junk be changing all the time.

I wouldn't even know the difference between Google and Bing, but I don't know anyone who uses Bing, so....

David Baker Realtor - Laveen Homes for sale : You are absolutly right, search engine ranking factors changes constantly, which is why we have to change SEO tactic constantly too.

Karen Fiddler, Broker/Owner: I dont blame you, although Bing(20% ) is the 2nd largest search engine, it is still no where close to Google, which dominates 64.4% of all searches.

The experience to get you to the other side!

I am glad to see Apple separate itself from the leeches at Google.

As for Bing, it is not as "developed" as Google, but I use it almost exclusively.  At least Microsoft has not developed it's search engine at the expense of everyone and everything on the planet - yet.

Google may be a verb now but it is on it's way out.

If folks value their privacy, they need to can Google.

Thx for the tips. thankfully, they basically (at a top level) vale the same things so optimizing for 1 usually helps for all.

Great information, I've been a loyal user of Bing's search engine for many years and actually preferred MS tags over traditional QR codes.  My only objection to your blog post is the ad at the end, which is not in the spirit of Active Rain.

What am I missing? I don't see an ad at the end.

Good information to know.  I have always just focused on Google and let the others deal with themselves.  Guess it is time to pay more attention to Bing.

Great attitude Rob! It never hurts to put yourself out there for the rest of the market who uses Bing.

RealtyTech Inc. I never really liked Bing. Hopefully, Safari will have an option to default to Google.

All I can say Michael, is that RealtyTech is a Google partner so we are eagerly waiting to see how Apple and Google will play this out.

Here's the thing.  Bing totally sucks as a search engine.  It's seems to have made it's way into the default search for a couple of major browsers, and the relevance of the results is almost always pretty dubious.

Seems like a battle of the titans. Sometimes I use google. Sometimes Bing. Really doesn't matter to me as long I get what I want from the search.

RealtyTech Inc. I think this may make minor difference to those who blog here in 'Rain! The SEO power of ActiveRain is going to be equally good for Bing/Yahoo!

Praful, I agree, this change will not affect ActiveRain blog posts much but the SEO of real estate agents websites are going to be affected if Google looses its search engine domination.
