This Thanksgiving Why Don't You Just Knock it Off?

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

This is just my quick little rant about how much I detest the spam I get around any celebratory day but especially at Thanksgiving. It seems that every year, advertisers, third-party vendors and anybody else who thinks they can make some money from reaching and touching when I want to slap them, feels like it's OK to do so.

You know what? I don't want your Thanksgiving well wishes. Just knock it off. I don't even know half of you and those I do know I don't want to hear from either unless you are my personal friend.

Don't use this holiday as an excuse to spam me and prospect under the guise of spreading good cheer. Give us all a break and use your good wishes and good thoughts for your own family and friends. You know who you are. And I know what day it is, don't need reminding from you.

Those of you who disagree, have at it.

Elizabeth, I favor taking a page from the Taxi drivers' manual:  THE METER IS RUNNING, WASTE MY TIME ON YOUR OWN FARE.  Okay, Exasperation has spoken; bug we are held captive.  When I answer the phone, I listen for about thirty seconds, politely interrupt and say I am not interested.  Keep me on the phone?  Polite leaves the room, and candor steps to the plate: "I am not interested.  My policy is very simple: Call me--No sale, if I were interested, I would have made the call.  As of this moment, you are wasting YOUR TIME--I WILL NOT SPEND A DIME. Thank you for getting the second hint.  Good day."

If they keep talking, they are on dead air.

Email? I drag the mouse across the visible name, and IF IT IS A SOLICITED ITEM, I make a choice.  If it is spam or scam, my mouse says SCRAM!  If I sign up for your newsletter, and it places more emphasis on trying to sell some "miracle" than providing the news promised, then I will scroll down and unsubscribe.  Online sales, unsolicited,  are not good use of your time.  I plan to invest my time,in my clients.  Thank you.

I would appreciate a real email from someone I do business with, but not the newsletter spammy kind.

Yes, and something personal, like, hey, Karen, I'm so happy to see you are coming to terms with the fact that life goes on and still working even though your heart undoubtedly aches terribly for the loss of your husband. You show incredible strength and are a person I admire. That last part was from me.

Elizabeth, I definitely do not disagree. It's over the top ... the spam never stops. And using a holiday as an excuse to attempt to get business ... puke!

They use any excuse to get business but capitalizing on holiday spirit is pretty darn low in my book.

It's amazing how we get on mailing lists. It's even worse when you send money to people, it's like they sell your name to biggest sucker list.

Um, Happy Thanksgiving?  I know what you are saying Elizabeth, I probably didn't receive as many emails as you- but for the foks I know, I  used the opportunity to reply and make it personal- I am thankful for the service of many of those that sent me an email, so I got a chance to let them know. Aren't I just a little ray of sunshine? LOL

I treat them like spam just like any other emails they send throughout the year. It would be too pathetic if I felt "blessed" to be in their thoughts during this Holiday season.

I'm late in getting around to saying hello and thanks for commenting and all of that other social niceties to which I routinely unsubscribe, but I get your point, and I'm looking forward to meeting with you in Hawaii next month.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

And here I thought I'd get slammed by a bunch of bloggers saying wth, why aren't you grateful for all of this slimy spam. And I was ready for it. You know, the problem is people just don't think or else they over think and come up with the idea, hey, it's a good thing to send out an announcement / promotion / well wishes on turkey day because people will love it . . . wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. Most people are probably too damned polite to bitch about it because somebody might say, whoa, why didn't you get the wishbone?
