Not wanting to work this week says a lot ...

Not wanting to work this week says a lot about why you are still working at Walmart or some other low paying job.

In a free market economy everyone will receive the pay and recognition that they earn.  If their current employer is not paying enough then someone will steal them away and pay them more.  And if they are not earning their paycheck then they will continue to lose jobs until they are at the pay level that they deserve, and sometimes this pay is nothing.

The best way to get a raise is to make yourself more valuable to your employer, get more education, take on more responsibility, work harder, make yourself indispensable.  Demanding that the government require your employer to pay you more just screws up the system for those who do work hard, and leads to you eventually being unemployed.

I have been hearing plenty of whining these past few weeks and months about Walmart or some other evil employer forcing their employees to work on Thanksgiving or that ridiculous new holiday, known as black friday.

And everytime that I hear this whining, my first thought is “you are lucky to have a job”, if you were working for me and you whined about working at a time when we needed you the most, I would be looking for your replacement.

I started my work career off at the age of 7 working on my parents farm, we never took a day off and it did not harm our family life, and to this day I still work all the holidays, and still find time to celebrate with my family.

My employees make their own schedules, so it is optional to either take the day off or work, most do a bit of work at home.

My kids are all planning to work Thanksgiving day and through the weekend; and their mother and I both encouraged this good work ethic.

We just asked that they turn in their work schedules so that we could determine the best time to celebrate the holiday.

Using your family as an excuse to not work is nothing but a farce, how many of of these whiners are really planning to spend quality time with their family and how many are planning to watch football, play video games, sit at the bar or go shopping.

If you really cared about your family you would work extra hard, bring home some money, and then schedule a time when you and your family can truly talk and enjoy each other.

Good Saturday morning Bob. So much for supply and demand. Many companies rely on the bottom feeders to do the menial tasks to keep expenses down and profits up. Raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour will just drive the costs up exponentially. What a better job? Pay your dues and learn a trade or get a better education!

Good morning Bob! If you want to improve your lifestyle, improve yourself! It is not someone else's responsibility! Enjoy your day!

Don't agree with this and I also was brought up on a farm with strong work ethics.  I don't believe we were put here to apply work over family time.  I think relationships are way more important.  Hope you had a good Thanksgiving.

Another thing is I'm not sure where this rumor of a minimum wage job is not a job to support oneself.  It is a stepping stone.  Here's an interesting article, The History of the United States' Minimum Wage.

Bob Crane It sounds like we had similar backgrounds. I worked on a turkey farm as a youth and learned that hard work is rewarded with more responsibility and the opportunity to advance. Please don't get me started on the minimum wage argument. Already many workers have experienced the expected result of a higher wage, i.e., forced time off!

Good morning Bob,

Seven years old; I must have gotten a break not starting until eight!

The work plan for me covers work and family 365 days a year. I do take the 29th of February off when it comes around!

Make yourself a great day.

That's one perspective, Bob, and I can appreciate it. By the same token, I was raised by an immigrant, single mother who worked three jobs so her kids didn't go to public schools. All I grew up with was seeing an example of hard work... and I've worked since I was 16. But that being said, having lost much family over the years, I'm a big believer in knowing when to take some time off and enjoy one's family and to celebrate together.

Sounds like you would be a good boss and hopefully your employees work hard for you because of it.

I have worked many 'big' holidays in my lifetime and was always thankful for the work.  John has sold two this holiday week and is out with 2 different sets of buyers again today.  Yep ..... I say we are blessed to be able to have a job and the sense to take care of business.

Feature worthy Bob Crane!

I had a conversation about this yesterday with a friend.  She was shopping after Thanksgiving dinner and the mood of the employees at the stores was good.  They were getting double time.  Not a bad gig.  Better than sleeping or watching football.

I couldn't agree more. There are opportunities in this country, maybe you have to work hard for awhile to get a different job, but you can do it. So do it.

Society has it backwards...everyone wants the pay then they say they will work harder...You need to show your worth first

Some of us have worked on many holidays and during most of the weekends during our careers. It is also important to schedule quality time with your family.

Yes, we do have to schedule our family time around various work schedules - but I really think work is important.  Family is too - which is why we work so hard to find a time we are all able to be together.

I am convinced there are two things that will keep a person in a minimum wage job. (1) Lack of education, AND (2) Lack of motivation!
