Its December, it must be "Squirrel Time"

By

I often watch the squirrels outside my window and wish I had an office full of employees that worked as hard as squirrels do!

But in December I notice they work extra hard at finding food and hiding it for the cold days ahead when they will be hungry, knowing that winter is not the ultimate time to get new food.

What does this have to do with your business you wonder? Well there is a good chance that not many buyers have time to buy in December, and few sellers prefer to have buyers trample through their home over the holidays. Therefore many agents relax, shop, clean, and take time off.

But what if you took a page from the squirrels? What if you warked hard this month gathering and hiding your food for January and February? How successful would you be then? So here is an idea for you-think like a squirrel in December!

How? Well, make contact with all past clients from the beginning of your time in real estate with an email, a call, a flyer, something. Purge your address book, write blogs, update your website. Send out reminders to all this years sales about tax writeoffs of home purchases. Don't send Christmas cards, but be different and send out New Year cards.

If you don't hide your food for the winters' cold, what will you eat in February? Take a lesson from the squirrels and work on this winter's leads now!

Hi Dennis Swartz ,  Great advice. Many of the animals we see, plan ahead...

And they say we are the superior species!

Yup! I do this... my version of a call, flyer, email is to touch base with my real estate agent clients and summarize or synopsize for them each of their smarteplanned properties market performance  in comparison with the MLS data ... ie your DOM was 17 and avg DOM for this neighborhood per MLS was 43, etc.   I also send out enrollment forms now allowing them to purchase blocks" of discounted sqft for the next year. Depending on what tier level they choose, it can drop the price anywhere from 15% to 35% for next year.  I'm a big believer in New Year's cards ... they don't get lost in the volume of cards during Christmas and "Wishing you a Happy and Prosperous New Year" is always approprate and appreciated in a business setting, and so easy to topically personalize .. "You  blew me away when you sold 1821 River Oaks Blvd in only 19 days --wishing you more like THAT one!"

I sooo agree with you.. time to  get squirrelly.

Good morning Dennis. We can learn much from all the animals, but my mission is to do not less business in the winter months, as there will always be lots of opportunities.

Excellent analogy, Dennis.  I always get much busier during December as it seems that many other agents become much harder to reach.

Great points Dennis Swartz. I never have thought acting like a squirrel could be beneficial to my business. I was wrong!

I too, love the idea of Happy New Year cards.  Years ago I used to send myself a New Year a New You card reminding myself that if I shoot for the moon, I'll land amongst the stars!  We all need to be our best cheer leader and know that we can control our year.  Fear and Faith cannot occupy the same place!

I too discovered that what you do in December and January determine your productive for the entire first quarter.

So, Next time someone calls me Squirrely  I am going to breakout into my Happy Dance!
