The Friendship Bridge...My Wallpaper

Friendship Bridge

I've meant to retake this photo for a long time and now that more people are likely to see it than normally would as it's hidden away in my office. I'm a little embarrassed to post it and that I still haven't paid the "Friendship Bridge" another photographic visit.

The "Friendship Bridge" is one of the more recognizable features in Big Spring Park, downtown Huntsville, Alabama. It was a gift from the Japanese people and specifically Major General Mikio Kimata to the city of Huntsville for its hospitality during the Generals attendance at the Redstone Arsenal's Guided Missile School Program during the mid 1960's.

To me, the Friendship Bridge speaks to the character and diversity of the city.  It's a reminder to me that Huntsville attracts people from around the world because of the mild climate, natural beauty, low unemployment, wonderful people...and, of course, the Redstone Arsenal and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. It is said that in the centrally located city of Madison, AL., (surrounded by Huntsville) and just minutes from the Redstone Arsenal that 80% of the residents are from somewhere else!

So when I look at the "Friendship Bridge" I think of all the wonderful people I've met and became friends. I think of Huntsville as being a place where different cultures come together, enjoy life and a high standard of living and do things that change the world on many different levels.

I guess that's a lot to ask of an old red bridge and a little "wallpaper", but I think it's a great standard to live by and a great reminder of the city I live in every time I boot up my computer...Huntsville, Alabama!

Good Morning Nick: I am too late for the party but it is really never too late.

"Why build a wall when you can build a bridge?"

There is a significant meaning behind the word bridge.

Beautiful wallpaper.

Hi Nick T Pappas.  Your picture of the bridge is great!  I'm at the other end of the state, in Gulf Shores, but I've been to Huntsville quite a few times.  I've seen the bridge.

Nick T Pappas That's a beautiful bridge.  Thanks for the history. behind it.  I didn't know Huntsville had such diversity.  I grew up in NYC, a very diverse community.

That's a great photo Nick!

It's funny how people of different cultures can influence us to think differently & how certain pictures can make us remeber friends even when they're not in the photo!

I hope you get over there again soon, life is too short for regrets.

Nice story about the bridge came to be. Probably a good reminder for all the military in the area. I read up on the Redstone Arsenal and it is sure a place that does quite a few not so friendly function to help guard us all. cheers cvc

Hi Nick T Pappas - That's a great Friendship Bridge! Does the City decorate it for parades or holidays? I'm guessing many people stop and take photos of themselves or just the bridge - it's so beautiful and the thoughtfulness behind it is something to appreciate.

Friends in the Rain!

Patricia

Hello Patricia Feager , I've never seen it decorated. People do have their pictures taken there, but mostly see people looking over to the spring below at the large fish swimming by...of course many people use it to get to the other side :)

Nick T Pappas - I like the name chosen for this bridge too. It must bring a smile to many people's faces just walking, crossing over the bridge, or pausing to see the fish swim by.

Have a wonderful day!
