The Friendship Bridge...My Wallpaper
I've meant to retake this photo for a long time and now that more people are likely to see it than normally would as it's hidden away in my office. I'm a little embarrassed to post it and that I still haven't paid the "Friendship Bridge" another photographic visit.
The "Friendship Bridge" is one of the more recognizable features in Big Spring Park, downtown Huntsville, Alabama. It was a gift from the Japanese people and specifically Major General Mikio Kimata to the city of Huntsville for its hospitality during the Generals attendance at the Redstone Arsenal's Guided Missile School Program during the mid 1960's.
To me, the Friendship Bridge speaks to the character and diversity of the city. It's a reminder to me that Huntsville attracts people from around the world because of the mild climate, natural beauty, low unemployment, wonderful people...and, of course, the Redstone Arsenal and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. It is said that in the centrally located city of Madison, AL., (surrounded by Huntsville) and just minutes from the Redstone Arsenal that 80% of the residents are from somewhere else!
So when I look at the "Friendship Bridge" I think of all the wonderful people I've met and became friends. I think of Huntsville as being a place where different cultures come together, enjoy life and a high standard of living and do things that change the world on many different levels.
I guess that's a lot to ask of an old red bridge and a little "wallpaper", but I think it's a great standard to live by and a great reminder of the city I live in every time I boot up my computer...Huntsville, Alabama!
