I couldn't wait for this warm day to come. Especially since I went into Whole Foods Market and seen morels were selling for 50 dollars a pound. I can't imagine anyone paying that much until a man I met yesterday said that was cheap, he's seen them at 100 dollars a pound. Now in my mind they had better be better than the nicest juicest steaks to pay that kind of money but hey if you are a fan I guess you must know how to eat them because when I ate them for the very first time I was eating what tasted like a sponge with sand in it. Grit in my teeth just isn't that fun. We had even soaked them.
So me and my girls headed out for our morel hunt. I now know why they charge the high prices. If you don't mind snakes, ticks and thorns in your shoes then you are a serious hunter. I'm a city/wanna/be country girl. Just seen my first morel this last year in Iowa. I like challenges so when we first started finding them last year I got excited. I figured if Iowa has them, surely Kansas has them, so I couldn't wait for the season to start. Well today wasnt so great. I've heard that if people know where to find them they usually don't give out their spots. Unfortunately we didn't find any today but for the thrill of the hunt I will go looking again. I'm not so sure my girls will want to go but I want to find the BIG White Morel.
This is for those like myself who had never seen one.
