Unless you have the natural knack as the “gifted” gift-giver for every occasion, many of us struggle with knowing what will make the receiver light up in pure delight. And that’s okay! It’s the thought that counts, right? Here are some ideas that will make anybody feel like you put the time and thought into exactly what they want.
Create a list of ideas long before Black Friday
By the time shopping season arrives, we are in such a frenzy to find the time! Throughout the year, create a list as you see creative gift ideas (your smartphone is a great place to keep this list!). The idea of a FitBit in July for your brother may have long escaped you by the time you are hitting the mall in December. It may even help your budget if you can start your shopping in the months before the holidays such as taking advantage of a Veterans Day sale. Your wallet will thank you in January when the credit card statements arrive.
Go local
Avoid the crowds at the big box stores and patronize your local vendors such as art from the fall festival, a gift card from the coffee shop on the square, a painting class at a nearby studio, or a bottle of merlot from the wine boutique on the corner. Even the community theatre for plays or music venues for concerts are a great way to keep your money local while giving your loved one something they enjoy.
A Night on the Town
Great gifts don’t necessarily have to be things! For the connoisseurs in your life, think of experiences instead! For those who love a good craft beer, a gift certificate to a brewery for a tasting is perfect. Many cities offer food tasting tours that open the doors to new restaurant experiences. Research walking city tours to exploring the local history and landmarks.
Think outside the box
Remember poster board projects in school? Presentation is everything! A gift that you may have only spent $10 can feel like you spent a million when wrapped perfectly. Place your gift in a bag with glittery tissue paper and tie it with beautiful sparkly ribbon. Add a festive ornament. Turn to YouTube to look for creative way of creating bows. Keep your eyes open for gift wrapping material at Tuesday Morning or Hobby Lobby for great deals.
And it’s okay if you’re on a budget….
Many of us are on a budget but it doesn’t mean you can’t make your gifts tailored for the ones that you love. Sometimes the holidays create stress for those under a budget. If you still love giving even under these circumstances, let them know that you are doing something a little different this year. These types of gifts can include offering them to help move into their new home, cleaning their house or yard, or babysitting and entertaining their kids for an evening. These gestures are huge acts of generosity! Remember: even in this season of buying, it’s not the material things that are most important this time of year. It’s about bringing us all together.
