A Journey to Success #2016

I've been on Active Rain since its infancy. 2006. Certainly did not know what was blogging, much less SEO and everything. That was also the year I decided to become a full-time realtor. Was doing it part-time for 4.5 years prior to that.

I got to know many awesome people during that time.

Some of them started new like me. A few key people have been in the business for a long long time by that point. They have built successful lives and have successful careers and families. I could only wish to be a fraction of them.

I remembered wishing to be more successful. I had coffee with a friend who just recently quit a successful real estate business to pursue a new business. She shared with me her book and strategy and her goal of 5 closings a month! By that point, I had only done 5 a year part-time!

I was looking at climbing Mount Everest - so high, so tall and will I ever get there?

For many years after that, I continued to pursue my dreams of climbing "SUCCESS". The past few years, I am there. Or at least I felt like it.

I am no longer pressured by numbers, transactions, dollar volume, commission gross income. Let the chips fall wherever they may. Life's too short to give myself self-imposing pressure that way. I literally have no control whether I close 5 or 50 transactions next year, sitting where I'm at (in December).

I do talk alot of planning, strategizing but I have no numbers in mind. Some people don't necessarily agree. They think that's not good enough. And that I dont have "SMART" goals - specific, measurable goals.

I let the chips fall wherever they may. I believe when I take care of ploughing my fields, God will take care of the rest.

My husband and I lead a Business Leadership group at church. We were talking about business planning the last couple of  months. One of the best things I've heard of, was this shared by my friend - Kip on SUCCESS.

Instead of measuring your Success with numbers, measure your Sucess by your systems and processes. You have control what you do. Measure that.

Let God do the rest!

Hi Loreena - I think those goals that some companies (Keller Williams comes to ming), try to push on realtors are just to insure that everyone is motivated.

As a golfer, I know that if you don't keep score, you tend to not give the same effort. Is real estate the same, I think so. I try to make sure I give the best customer service, and not worry about number of closings, but at the end of the day, if I haven't found a way to measure my success, how do I know where I stand?

I've gone back to giving myself a goal in closings and commissions, and it helps with my advertising budget. I keep my advertising budget at 10% of gross commissions, and adjust it at the beginning of each year. Is that the correct number? Nobody knows, but I'm happy with it.

Have a great week.

Love the thought process Loreena Yeo !! I think we need some goals, but I agree if we have some process in place, it should fall into place. I know by not watching and checking my website this year on a regular basis (doing a stealth check of where I'm ranking) I lost some serious ground.

I've never followed the "I need X appointments to have X closings" mindset...but I've also only got to where I really wanted to be once in the past few years (income goals) so I'm looking at everything and trying to come up with the system to make it happen, yet find time to have a life.

Love this, Loreena.  Consistency, and just doing SOMETHING is a great way to reach success, whatever that may mean to an individual.  Taking some action is better than tons of planning/analyzing.

"Systems and processes", I couldn't say it better.  Goals (whether specific and measurable or not) are rarely realized without sytstems and processes.  That's the beauty, and to some the burden, of pursuing success.  Goals can get us motivated and excited, but they fizzle like a deflating balloon without a solid system in place.

Really great post and I agree with you. God has a plan and it is my job to just stay in the path of His leading.

I love your thought process and after being in the business for 13 years, I do did the same thing a couple of years ago. I stopped looking at the numbers, commission checks, etc and just "let things fall into place". I have faith and it's worked! I feel less stressed out and try to enjoy my clients instead of just thinking of money all the time. As I know it's not a way to live and know God has my back.
