ASK AN AMBASSADOR: Chasing The Feature Fairy

Feature Fairy?ASK AN AMBASSADOR: Chasing The Feature Fairy

We're in real estate.  By nature, that means most of us are competitive.  That we've got some ego (which we put aside for our clients' sake).  That we like to get recognized (because really, what good is a plaque on the wall or some glass trophy but to tell us "we done good"??).

But as bloggers in the Rain, it's EASY to get caught up in the chase for a Feature.

But frankly it's long odds.  Let's do the math:

Typical day there's 18 slots on the Home page and they don't always cycle through in a day, so maybe there won't even be 18 new featured posts that day.

Next, assume 1500 to 2000 posts a day get written on an average day in the Rain.

18 divided by 2000 means 1 out of every 111 posts gets featured.

And that's just if everything was done at random and there weren't any criteria involved, but if you watch the Feature Board you'll see some things that increase or decrease your odds.

Things that decrease your odds:

  • You write about a listing or open house
  • You write about a subdivision
  • You write a market report
  • You write about a local event.

Note that these topics are GREAT for building your business with local buyers and sellers, but they're not going to gain much engagement from fellow Rainers.  But what's more important to you, BUSINESS that pays the bills, or another notch in your Gold Star belt?

Other things that can hurt your odds of getting Featured:

  • Your post isn't aesthetically appealing (wall of words, no pictures/graphics, small font, etc.)
  • This also means don't use stolen photos/graphics (e.g the ones that still have the watermark on them!).
  • It's full of typos and grammar errors
  • Your topic choice (have you seen many posts about politics or religion on the front page?)

On the flip side, things that IMPROVE your odds:

  • Solid well written ORIGINAL content of broad appeal to agents across the community
  • Being a first time poster (after that, well it's a bit tougher until you've built more of a reputation)
  • Being likable.  People clicking the Like button on your posts improve the odds the AR Staff takes a look at what you've written.
  • Engage people and the community.  (E.g. Pat Kennedy's and Kathy Streib's Sunday posts are a community service type post that spotlight a lot of different Rainers, so their odds of being Featured are pretty solid each week because those posts are a service to the Rain community).

Bottom line, if you write with the hope of getting Featured, you're probably going to be disappointed.  That's just the blunt math of the situation.  There's no exact formula to getting that gold star Feature, there's some mystery and illogical happenings behind the green curtain.  Some you'll agree with, some you won't.  Some great stuff WILL get missed, and that's going to happen every day.  But if you write every post with quality, the odds of something good happening do go up!

Personally, we've collected plenty of features in 5+ years of blogging nonstop.  And here's the dirty secret about Features:  THEY DO NOT MAKE MY PHONE RING!  Buyers and sellers call us based on posts that will NEVER see the light of the front page, nor should those posts.  The audience for them is NOT other Rainers but the consumer.  Those posts are the ones that pay our bills.

On the other hand, do I appreciate it when one of our Tuesday Ask An Ambassador series does get featured?  Of course, but perhaps not for the reason you think.  My primary reason for writing the series is to (hopefully) help other members of the Rain have a better blogging experience and get results from blogging.

If we can help shorten the learning curve to blogging effectiveness, bloggers are more likely to stick around.  That's good for the entire community, because who knows who will be the next person that blogs that nugget of great information that makes our personal or business lives that much better?

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help!

The funny thing is often when I work really hard on something and think I hit a home run it goes now where.  Then I toss out something fast, dirty and quick and it catches fire.

Pat, I've spent a lot of time in the Rain learning what does and doesn't work :)

Marte, I think you're on target.  Posts that help the community (as yours are often intended to do) probably have a significantly higher percentage of being featured.

Diana, It's changed over time too, and might change more.  Years ago Localism posts would make the front page.  Obviously those are being passed over for more community wide interest topics.

Donald, They certainly do!  If you can't get the click, you can't get a Like or a Feature.

Dave, And I think that's one of the things that gets overlooked when some feel the same people get featured too much.  Many of those folks post OFTEN, so they're going to have refined the art, collected a larger following and have bumped their chances of being selected.

Larry & Sheila, To my knowledge they've never DIRECTLY helped.  They may have increased awareness for agent to agent referrals, but even that I can't point to specifically.

Deb, It certainly does!  I learn FAR more here to help my business than any CE courses I've taken.

Greg, I understand the desire to have more faces on the feature page, but it's a catch-22 perhaps because the bloggers that have been here for many moons don't want to be left out either.

Michael, My belief is that as long as they exist there will be discontent over the topic.

Terry, I think the straight from the heart ones often flow and resonate more than those posts that we "work" on for extended periods.

Gary, The livin' it aspect and putting that to a post has mass appeal.

Gene, There's just no predicting what the Feature Fairy will find and select and which will just plain get missed.

I personally like the informative blogs the best. Don't write that many but when I do that is what I strive for.

Liz and Bill Spear - thank you for taking the time to respond in such detail. You made many good points that I had not fully considered, so thank you for pointing those out. You must concede that some features are not always what one would expect, especially taking into account Bob Stewart 's argument that if a potential prospect happens to go to the AR page expecting Real Estate content and finds a random piece, they might leave. All the camaraderie belongs somewhere, but how to "segregate" the two and maintain the distinctions within the featured category? Also, I recall a feature that advertised predatory lending - is that a liability for AR? How are those posts screened?

Olga Simoncelli ,

I'm sure over 9 years and thousands of featured posts there have probably been a few (or more) posts that made it to the home page that exposed us to some liability. That's just part of the accepted risk when you have a publishing platform.

We are currently working on a radical new design for the home page. One that utilizes different channels and makes the home page more dynamic, so that we can showcase different kinds of content based on what you are interested in that particular day.

I've seen some early mock ups and have been working on defining what the primary channel topics are to be, but it's going to really expand access to certain kinds of content and give more visibility to more people.

We're excited about it.

In the meantime, Bill nails it in so many ways! Great stuff Bill!

Bill, That type is good for engaging the community!

Olga, Bob got here pretty quickly!  Obviously with any human driven selection process there will be things that fall through the cracks and features picked that maybe shouldn't be selected.  The theory is the Feature Fairy sometimes drinks heavily :)

Bob, Looking forward to the new version and thanks for jumping in here!

I'm crushed.

As much as I think it "cool" to get featured, because it feels like some validation for what I write, as many have said, the phone ringing or an email inquiry is the end game result we really want.

Thom, And ultimately it is about the end game, making the phone ring and gaining clients.  Without that, what are we doing?

Liz and Bill Spear  Such good information.

This post from 2015 would be perfect for updating. Seems like we are getting the same question about gold stars as we did at the beginning of AR.

I don't think the question will ever go away!  Fortunately the fundamentals stay close to the same, even if the number of slots and turnover changes.  If anything, I'd say presently it's even more of a long shot to get the star since the feature board turns over less regularly than it did in 2015.

The best thing we can do is what we need to do to attract consumers.  The gold stars are just bling bling :)
