During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, your kitchen will be the busiest and messiest place of your home. Aside from people coming and going, there most likely will be a lot of food and non-food stuff cluttering your kitchen. To get your kitchen in shape for the holiday season, here are some effective tips to help you declutter and get things organized, making your kitchen the perfect workspace.
1. Free your countertops. Your kitchen counter serves as the "drop zone" in your kitchen. It has everything in there - from mail stacks, keys, backpacks, homeworks, water bottles, books and maybe even clothes. Whenever you want to prepare or cook food, maneuvering around these other stuff is really challenging. To eliminate this problem and make your countertops clutter-free, designate a space just for food prep. It's fine having other things on your countertops as long as they do not invade your reserved space for food prep. It is also necessary to have a regular de-clutter schedule to free up your work space from time to time.
Another technique in organizing your countertops is to arrange items according to how frequently you use them. For example, serving spoons, knives, peelers and other regularly used kitchen tools can be hang on the wall. You can also hang pots and pans in the ceiling.
2. Organize your pantry. Most people just stuff grocery items in the pantry. But with the holidays coming soon, it will be good to free up some space and take advantage of your pantry's storage capacity. You can start by pulling everything out, wiping the shelves, and inspecting every item on your pantry. Check for expiration dates and throw away expired items. Consolidate items and repackage them into smaller containers to save room for other items. Group items that are the same. For example, canned goods should go together, as well as snacks, dry goods, etc. Put everything back on the shelves according to what makes sense to you and your family. You can place dry goods and canned goods on the top while the snacks can be placed on the lowest shelf for easy reach.
3. Declutter your cabinets. With lots of cooking and food preparation activities going on during the holidays, what you need is a lot of space. If you have kitchen cabinets, it's time you take a lot at what's crammed in there and check if the items are grouped logically. Group kitchen items according to purpose and use, and store then in specific drawers or cupboards. For example, bags and wraps should be kept in an easily accessible drawer while bakeware can be stored in a cabinet that's out of the children's reach.
Keeping your kitchen clutter-free should not only be done during the holiday season. You can set a regular schedule of de-cluttering and organizing your kitchen so you don't have to do everything during busy kitchen seasons.
