Keeping Your Kitchen Clutter-Free During The Holidays

By
Real Estate Agent

During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, your kitchen will be the busiest and messiest place of your home. Aside from people coming and going, there most likely will be a lot of food and non-food stuff cluttering your kitchen. To get your kitchen in shape for the holiday season, here are some effective tips to help you declutter and get things organized, making your kitchen the perfect workspace.

1. Free your countertops. Your kitchen counter serves as the "drop zone" in your kitchen. It has everything in there - from mail stacks, keys, backpacks, homeworks, water bottles, books and maybe even clothes. Whenever you want to prepare or cook food, maneuvering around these other stuff is really challenging. To eliminate this problem and make your countertops clutter-free, designate a space just for food prep. It's fine having other things on your countertops as long as they do not invade your reserved space for food prep. It is also necessary to have a regular de-clutter schedule to free up your work space from time to time.
Another technique in organizing your countertops is to arrange items according to how frequently you use them. For example, serving spoons, knives, peelers and other regularly used kitchen tools can be hang on the wall. You can also hang pots and pans in the ceiling.

2. Organize your pantry. Most people just stuff grocery items in the pantry. But with the holidays coming soon, it will be good to free up some space and take advantage of your pantry's storage capacity. You can start by pulling everything out, wiping the shelves, and inspecting every item on your pantry. Check for expiration dates and throw away expired items. Consolidate items and repackage them into smaller containers to save room for other items. Group items that are the same. For example, canned goods should go together, as well as snacks, dry goods, etc. Put everything back on the shelves according to what makes sense to you and your family. You can place dry goods and canned goods on the top while the snacks can be placed on the lowest shelf for easy reach.

3. Declutter your cabinets. With lots of cooking and food preparation activities going on during the holidays, what you need is a lot of space. If you have kitchen cabinets, it's time you take a lot at what's crammed in there and check if the items are grouped logically. Group kitchen items according to purpose and use, and store then in specific drawers or cupboards. For example, bags and wraps should be kept in an easily accessible drawer while bakeware can be stored in a cabinet that's out of the children's reach.

Keeping your kitchen clutter-free should not only be done during the holiday season. You can set a regular schedule of de-cluttering and organizing your kitchen so you don't have to do everything during busy kitchen seasons.

Coleen, this is why I think the popularity of the opened up to the whole living area kitchens are going to wear thin.  This is especially true in smaller condos where the kitchens are tiny and open!

Good morning, Coleen -- and not just during the holidays. I'm a big believer in reducing counter clutter year-round. Easier to clean and easier on the eyes.

One of my pet peeves is walking into a house for sale that has a cluttered kitchen.  If only sellers knew how much that is costing them!

That's true Margaret. As realtors I see it as our responsibility to educate our sellers on these things.

Well deserved feature here Colleen. A messy counter will not only leave a bad impression to buyers but also give the appearance of lack of counter space.

Good advice! I did all this before and during Thanksgiving and I am exhausted! My last houseguest just left. With four kids I know kitchen clutter, especially the counters!

Olga, I have been trying to figure out a way to have guests assist with clean up. Any suggestions? Would that be an awful thing to do?

Well, while this is good advice, not sure this can be done.  Holiday, kids out of school, guests, more family..............not happening.

Good information Coleen! Although it sounds eerily like you have been to my kitchen and are using me as an example, I trust this is more common than not! I could definitely see the advantage to a regular de-clutter schedule.

I am a bit over the top when it comes to having a clutter free kitchen. When it's party time, I like my counters as free as possible. I find the key is cleaning as you go along. Instead of dropping things in the sink as you use them....wash them immediately or fill the dishwasher as you go along. If it's not going to be used or serving as decor get rid of it!

I have an endearing name for pantries and kitchen cabinets, and that's 'prime real estate".  The space is at a premium and should be used for the most necessary kitchen items and food prep. If it doesn't belong or is seldom used, eliminate or move it. Great tips, Coleen.
