Home Depot in Waterbury CT Celebrates the Festival of Lights
There was something about the music at the Waterbury CT Home Depot today that was slightly out of the norm. The songs had a Holiday tone, but the words were strange to me.
As I was getting over to the cashier's area a cluster of children and adults caught my eye. They were focused on each other and watching the kids activities. It seemed to be more of a kids' birthday celebration than the normal Home Depot style of instructional presentation. A closer look saw the kids busy at assembly something on the make-shift table they had.
Then it all made sense to me. The music, the kids and the pieces they were making, menorahs made of wood.
I had to ask the attendant from Home Depot what they were doing and got a very detailed explanation.
Every year at this time, Home Depot holds a free promotion for Jewish youths to came and make a menorah to celebrate Hanukkah. All the materials are donated by Home Depot and for the few hours the kids are there the music are their typical Holiday songs, some of which bear a striking resemblance to some of the less religious songs of the season.
The kids were having a ball, with the assembly, the glue, painting the menorahs and just being, kids.
For those in the Greater Waterbury Area, the Festival of lights is a religious tradition for the re-dedication of the temples. It is observed for 8 nights and each day a candle on the menorah is lit with the 9th candle being identified from the rest by a higher position on the Menorah.
Being in the Season of Hanukkah, this once a year day offered by Home Depot was most appreciated.
