Art and Architecture at an Airport

I was at the Portland airport. It is a stunningly beautiful airport and even the lines and textures spoke to me.

Some of my photos are of the actual structure surrounding me, some were pieces of standing art.

There is something dramatic in clean lines and circles that create abstract art.

Abstract art is one of my favorite mediums.

This was a shot towards the ceiling. I did nothing to the color, was shooting into the light and simply changed the ISO, I believe. It reminds me of a lighthouse.

There is "art" everywhere, just look for it!

Hi Debb Janes , I appreciate Modern Art and I have done award winning pieces of it, but when it comes to creating, I prefer realism.  Thanks for sharing those awesome photos.

Larry, wrong girl--I'm Gayle, but Debb Janes is a wonderful "artist" in her own right!

Gayle,

It is a beautiful airport, no doubt about that.  Last time we were there we landed way out on the tarmac from Santa Barbara, and it was a long walk to get to the building.  On the way back, we went through the building and back outside to the tarmac where the little planes fly from.  Yes, there is art everywhere, one has to be in the mindset to find it.  A

Love our airport and there is so much more than this to it! I actually have been on that concourse recently. They support local artists, too, as well as local retailers, like Powell's Books...

Ha, came over because of Larry. Love that he confused us. I too love our airport. I'm always to happy to fy back home. It's clean, welcoming and visually beautiful.  Plus. the piano player in the main lobby makes me smile. Art is everywhere.  Ron and Alexandra were in the concourse where Alaska's smaller planes fly in/out. I'm so familiar with it...

I took photos of one of the piano players, too, Debb. He and I got to talking and afterwards he came over and gave me his CD--what a terrific gesture! (It had been so long since I'd been there, he was new to me, so first thing that AM, I thanked him for the quiet energy and put $ in his tip jar. Later he gave me his music on CD. And I, too was taking Alaska's small plane!

That is definitely some interesting art, although it does nothing for me personally, haha.  I much prefer your photography, as that is more enjoyable art to me!!

Your admonition that art is everywhere if we simply look for it is a great reminder. I agree with you that airports are often dramatically beautiful places.

Gayle, you most likely were like a kid in a candy shop with all that surrounded you.  Nice shots.  Mark

Mark, this doesn't even scratch the surface! I refrained from going mad with all of the types of shots I took. I could do three blogposts on this place. It is marvelous to be part of Portland and call Oregon my home.

Deanna, that's what makes art so interesting--everyone has a different viewpoint. If you don't like one, you might like the next one! Thanks for looking with kind eyes.

Great photos!  I've been flying in and out of PDX a LOT the past few months (many trips to CA to help some family members) and every time I fly in or out I realize why PDX repeatedly wins the Travel + Leisure Magazine Award for Best Airport in the U.S!  The food and shops are amazing, and like you, I love the piano man!
