Artist Spotlight:
Chandra Currelley
Get to know this amazing singer!
If you don't know Chandra Currelley's name, you probably know her face. She is not only an amazing vocalist, she is also an actress who has appeared in numerous stage plays in the Atlanta metro area and has worked on several projects with actor and director, Tyler Perry. She can currently be seen playing the role of the sassy and hilarious Miss V. in Tyler Perry's sitcom, "For Better or Worse" which airs on the OWN channel.
We had the pleasure of seeing Chandra Currelley perform over the Thanksgiving holiday at a really beautiful jazz club on the south side of Atlanta called St. James Live! Ms. Curelley hit the stage looking stunning in a gorgeous evening gown and a fabulous pair of silver pumps. It didn't take long for her to get the audience going as she sang to us in her sultry, smooth and soulful voice. However, don't let the smoothness fool you! Chandra took it back to classic jazz and paid homage to late, great artists like Sarah Vaughn and the one and only Ella Fitzgerald. Chandra did some old school scatting with new school beat-box flavor and as she flowed with rhythmic syncopation, her drummer, Jorel Flynn, affectionately known as JFly, kept right up with her! It was awesome! Ms. Currelley had us on our feet when she sang the crowd favorite, 'Welcome to My Love' and she showed off her skills with the jazz standard 'A Night in Tunisa'. Some people might also remember Ms. Currelley from her role in the 2005 Tyler Perry movie "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" where she played a lounge singer. You better believe that Chandra Currelley was not leaving St. James that night without performing the hit song, 'Love Again' from "Diary of a Mad Black Woman". When she sang that song....WOW!! 'Love Again' is a beautiful, romantic ballad about a woman who is ready to take a chance on love again. She brought the house down with that one!
I have to also commend the band behind Chandra which featured some of the best musicians in Atlanta: Teja Veal on bass, Wes Byrd on keyboards, Darian Emory on saxophone and the amazing Jorel "JFly" Flynn on drums. The band also showcased the talents of Ms. Currelley's own son, Agape, on trumpet.
