How Do I Move That?

It’s easy to accumulate a lot of stuff in a house as the years go by.  I’m sure most of you make a purchase, not even thinking about how you’ll move the item one day.  But moving day is now fast-approaching, and you’re in a dilemma.  What do I do with my aquarium or life-size cardboard cutout of a celebrity?  realtor.com did some research and came up with some ideas on how to move your 8 strange or awkward possessions

Aquariums

If you have an aquarium, you’re going to have to take it apart.  There’s no easy way to move the aquarium in its entirety.  And in order to keep the glass from getting shattered, you’ll need the right equipment to pack it up correctly.  Hardware stores and moving companies should have mirror boxes designed for glass.

Antique crystal chandeliers

Again, there’s no easy way to move these mammoth sized chandeliers and it’s doubtful you’ll be able to find a carton or box to fit it.  One moving expert suggests taking several cartons and piece them together to fit your chandelier.  Just make sure to wrap individual pieces with care in foam packing paper or thin bubble wrap.

Life-size cardboard cutouts

It might have seemed like a good idea at the time, but now that you’re looking at the life-size cardboard cutout of, maybe, your favorite Star Wars character, you’re wondering what you were thinking when you bought it.  No worries.  Slip the cutout into a mattress carton or between your mattress and box spring and load them vertically onto the truck.

Large indoor trees

Indoor trees look great but trying to move one can present quite a challenge.  Fragile limbs and easily wilted leaves requires some extra TLC.  Try to maintain conditions as close as possible in the house and wrap the branches in dampened newsprint, if necessary.

Anatomical human skeletons

It’s not my thing, but some people think it’s cool to have a life-size skeleton in their house.  These can be tricky to move and extra precaution must be taken; otherwise, it might not look like a skeleton after the move.  Trying padding it and putting it in cardboard.  You might even want to wrap the more delicate bones so they don’t break.

Pinball machines and classic arcade games

Like the skeleton, you’ll need lots of padding to move a pinball machine or classic arcade game.  You can even try blankets.  Make sure to tape the ends down.  Put smaller boxes between the legs once it’s in the moving truck so the machine won’t move around too much.

Salon chairs and tanning beds

Luckily, salon chairs and tanning beds aren’t as fragile but they definitely are bulky.  You definitely will need to find a big enough box or tape several boxes together.  Then use padding to keep the beds and chairs from moving around.

Giant musical instruments

Whether you have a baby grand piano or some other large instrument, moving large musical instruments must be handled with care.  It’s best to hire a professional who specializes in moving instruments.

In the end, a little more effort needs to be placed into moving these unique items, but once you get settled into your new home, it’ll be worth it, having all your possessions in tact!
