Drone Rules & Regulations, as well as Deadlines Released.

Drone Registration begins on Monday, December 21, 2015.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) , just released the long awaited answers to Drone Photography for Real Estate Professionals and other UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) operators.

Santa Brought Me a Drone for Christmas!

It is expected there will be Christmas sales of 400,000 Drones this year, with more sales in 2016.

All Drones from .55 to 50+ lbs must be registered by February 19, 2016.  Fines could be up to $27,500 for unregistered Drones. If the Drone was purchased before Monday, December 21, 2015, you have until the February deadline. If you purchased the Drone as of December 21, 2015, the drone must be registered before it can be flown.

The registration must be on-line and include your name, address and email address and will cost a $5 fee.  That fee will be reimbursed for people that register their Drone within 30 days from Dec. 21.

Your registration will include the registration number and procedures to placed on the drone. This will make it easier to trace back to the owner, in the event of a crash or incident. For more than one drone you just put the same number on all of them. The regulations will be available when you register on-line.

The Drones are restricted to fly below 400 feet and not within 5 miles of an airport.

Other questions and answers are covered in the

FAA website. Click here for a list of questions and answers.

Larry Johnston this is one reason I love ActiveRain!

Thanks for sharing great information about the drones. I had bought one a while ago and did not do anything with it. Now at least I will register it - and avoid fine.

I read this, Larry.  It's a step in the right direction but is a little broad and probably not going to do a thing for safety.

Larry glad to have the guidlines finally. I liked the comment about whether home insurance will cover accidents to property.

Larry, this is a toy many are purchasing, but to use it for professional purposes will need that license!

Larry Johnston I can see using one for business, but not for much else. Registration is one way to trace any in illegal activities.

Thanks for the information Larry Johnston regarding the rules and regs emerging from the FAA about the legal way to be involved with drone aerial photography.  Let's hope those who have been ignoring the FAA so far and doing it anyway have the sense to comply.  The last thing we need is some idiot causing a commercial flight to crash, and there have been some close calls...

Personally I like the idea about drones needing to be registered. Anyone that plans to use them for good reasons won't have a problem with that, but the others maybe not.

I see a growing market for 1/2 pound drones; and the way technology is going that may not be hard.  The rules do not sound unreasonable, but my concern is once the foot is in the door the fees and rules will grow.

Larry Johnston - The FAA rules that have just been released do NOT apply to real estate agents or other commercial rules.  They have different rules that need to be followed.  The FAA is in the process of developing new rules for commercial use.

I am ok with the $5 reg fee, but I am not ok with these communists making unreasonable restrictions on businesses that the rest of the public does not need to follow.  Clearly not a safety issue, just an anti business issue!
