Proposed Dare County Bridge Repairs

By

If things go as planned, Dare County should see repair work begin on 3 Dare County Bridges in the winter of 2017. The repair work is planned to take place in the winter to avoid congestion during the summer tourist season.

The Wright Memorial bridge connecting Kitty Hawk with the Currituck mainland will have the eastbound span resurfaced and repairs done to the concrete support span. This part of the bridge is almost 50 years old and these repairs are way overdue as the bridge handles 30-50,000 vehicles a day during the peak summer vacation season.

The Alligator River Bridge is 55 years old and should be replaced but the repairs will have to do for now. This two lane bridge is one of the hurricane evacuation routes and these repairs will create some real traffic snarls while people wait for their turn to cross.

I don't understand why the Virginia Dare Bridge, which connects the Dare County Mainland to the Outer Banks is in need of repairs as it is an almost brand new bridge. Considering the cost of a new bridge, they should come with some type of warranty where the builder is held responsible for how they build the bridge.
