What I Learned in Real Estate

Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker RCI Realty

There’s never a dull moment in real estate! We love how our agent, Kent found a way to learn a lesson in a less than great situation.  St. Patricks day may still be months away, but this story is too good not to share.  Let’s put Christmas on hold for a moment and learn about the luck of the Irish…

As a realtor you encounter a multitude of problems showing homes.  Sometimes the home is poorly staged.  Sometimes its too cluttered and sometimes too bare.  Sometimes the home is just ugly.  It is always a gamble hinged on how your client interacts with the space.  Sometimes it's the luck of the Irish.

"I had a young professional couple looking for a home near campus.  They were both MSU alumni and had fond memories of their college years.  They asked to see a home new to the market on St Patrick's Day.  I called the listing agent and set up the showing for the next morning.  The listing agent warned me that the home was currently rented to 6 students and because of the holiday it might be difficult to show but she assured me that I was good to go.

We arrived the day after St Patrick's  around 9:00 AM.   I met my clients in the driveway and discussed the exterior and roof.  We then made our way into the home through the kitchen door.  As we entered we could smell the distinct odor of alcoholic beverages and the aftermath of excessive libations.  The kitchen was littered with empty cans, cups and bottles.  We stepped over the mess as we moved into the living room.  Trying to stay positive, I indicated that the living area had great space and flowed well into the kitchen.  On the north wall we saw what appeared to be a lifeless body on a sofa that looked like it had been well cared for in the 80's but since abandoned.  As we crossed the threshold the lifeless body moved.  The young, semi-clothed man sat upright and turned his head in our general direction.  He made an attempt to speak but the words were incoherent.  He slumped back on the couch and returned to his peaceful slumber.  My clients and I had a slight chuckle at his expense.

We made our way down the hallway and encountered another victim of over celebration laying in the threshold of the doorway of the first bedroom to the right.   It appeared that he was attempting to make his way to the bed in the room but lost momentum negotiating the doorway.  We continued down the hall.  Our shoes made funny sounds.  The floor was sticky.  Bedroom two was open and it appeared there were several (more than two) in a bed in the center of the room.  I think I mentioned to my clients how great these floors would look if they were sanded.  The next room was just as fun.  It had a bunk bed in it, full with two girls in each bed.  They woke as we entered and wished us a good morning but they looked like they had seen better mornings.  My clients and I thought the experience funny but it certainly didn’t sell the house well.  The home itself was prefect, just bad timing.  We spent several minutes outside cleaning our shoes in the grass before we got back in the car.  Moral of the story....Never show a house near campus on the day after St Patrick's Day. "
