“Do You Ever Really Know?”

I ask clients all the time, why they do business with me compared to a bank or credit union? Believe me; over the years I have gotten answers I would not have imagined:

“You sold me a house a few years ago”

“You’re the only one that returned my call”

“I drive by your sign all the time”

“So and so referred me”

All are great, but I don’t learn as much from these answers as I do when I have the opportunity to ask folks that choose to go elsewhere.

Over the years when I ask this question to those that have decided to do business somewhere else, I have received answers such as:

“Banks have better rates than a mortgage broker”

“Mortgage brokers caused the housing crisis”

“You would be charging points and my bank doesn’t”

“I’ll get a mortgage from my bank in a few days”

Do you know what all of this means? There are clients that would deal with me because I am not a bank and there are many clients that would never go to a bank for mortgage. There is lots of business to go around and if you do a good job with your clients they will come back year after year and refer their friends, families and co-workers.

Who do you know that needs my help?

Joe, some of my clients ask for a broker versus a big bank, or even a credit union that would give more personalized service.

Hi Joe --- you're right there's plenty of business to go around ---- as far as the reasons why(or why not) we are chosen --- I'm sure that list would be quite long.

Joe Petrowsky You are right, there is plenty of business to go around, but people still need to know the facts.

Big Banks aren't their friends, but a mortgage broker could be.

And part of it is simply education needed by the client! I love that you learn from those who don't choose you...it shows me your continual push to improve and grow.

I would deal with you, because I've come to know you and the way you do business. You know your business inside and out and look out for the best interest of people...even if it means you won't be doing a mortgage for them.

I talk with people who say they go to their bank because they have a relationship with that bank. The only thing that tells me is banks are very sneaky about public relations because there is NO relationship with a bank anymore. Plus, they just don't know any better. Far as I'm concerned, a mortgage broker is just about always, hands down, your best bet for a mortgage (except for maybe very limited types of loans like those once offered for teachers, for example).

Joe it is obvious you guys were the root behind the whole mortgage crisis, and that you charge a boat load of points :)

Amazing how people who should know better come up with this stuff.

Two separate people I know started out going to their bank. There seemed to be always one more form to fill out. Both got digusted and went somewhere else.

I obviously work at a bank Joe Petrowsky , so we are on different sides of the fence.   I think it all comes from the housing crash when bankers were pointing at brokers and brokers were pointing at bankers as the cause.   The reality is bad people doing bad things caused it.   Good mortgage people, like you and I, are what has saved the industry and brought it back.
