Gluten in Medications...Who Knew ? Now YOU Do !

   Last weekend we had "neighbor Christmas" and our bhostess is gluten intolerant so I am very careful to sure anything we bring is Gluten Free....gluten freeand beyond that I ask her what brands she prefers since apparently there is a huge difference in taste.  Some brands she says, you can almost "not tell" are gluten free and others....oh yes...you know for sure it is not whatever you are used to tasting at all.

 pills   A while ago, we had another friend that I drove to a dental surgery appointment. The doctor had presribed both pain medication and an antibiotic and we were going to pick up both prescriptions before I took her home.  She asked the pharmacist if the medications contained gluten....sure enough they did !     So now she has her pharmacy file tagged GLUTEN FREE ONLY .

   This is apparently a little known fact....if you or anyone you know is gluten intolerant.....have the pharmacist flag the file so that you are not accidentally prescribed something that will make you sick !

Sally and David, who knew?  Gluten is sort of like sugar - you never know where it's lurking.

Sally and David I know a number of people who are gluten intolerant, but have never heard them say it is in medicine as well.  Good to know.

Very interesting Sally K. & David L. Hanson I had never even heard of gluten until recently. My Bride is a teacher and there are so many allergies these days it's kind of frighting.

You HAVE to read labels carefully. 

Recently I looked into a stool softener for someone I know that an on line "chat" room said Costco sold for a much cheaper price.  The basic ingredient was exactly the same in the Costco brand.  But that brand had chemicals the one ordered by the doctor did not have.  Chemical free was the most important criteria.  So, yo no buy-o el Costco brand-o.  (Perfect Spanish)

You HAVE to read labels carefully.

  Yes Jay Markanich...the problem is that with a prescription...there is no content label and many people don't suspect gluten would be a part of the contents...spread the word !

I have seen labels recently saying , 'glutein free ' at the pharmacy.

That's true Gita but you aren't likely to know on a prescription as opposed to an over the counter medication if there is gluten in the medication.

I'm so thankful you shared this information.  Debbie is really having a hard time with going gluten free.  She's been really sick for many months and the Dr's are just now figuring out it's probably gluten.

I had no idea... but then again I don't have a gluten issue so don't follow this all that closely. Thanks for the heads up as I do know a number of people who have to be gluten free.
