Baby Step Your Way Towards Your New Year’s Goals…

This is the time of year when we are thinking about our goals and plans Baby step your way to your goalfor the New Year.  They may be for our business-growing your brokerage; adding to your team; getting certified in something… or personal- losing weight; eating healthier; learning a new language.

Everyone makes these goals or resolutions.

You have to know where you’re going to get where you want to be.

It’s so easy to lay out our goals on paper or digitally, but if that’s all you do, you’re not going to get very far.

We were having breakfast with a friend who’d survived a heart attack while diving in the islands. Upon his return, he faced several months of not even having the strength to walk to the mailbox.  Because he was homebound, he also gained a lot of weight.

One day he took stock of his life and realized that this was not the way he wanted to live.

He set out on an action plan that began with that one small baby step.

He began his journey to that mailbox and it started with one baby step. Each day he took one step more until he could make the whole trip and back.

He said this:

Start with baby steps-you may not get where you’re going but you’ll get a lot further than you’d get if you kept waiting to take that giant leap.

Whatever it is you hope for, go on and begin with just one baby step today.  You’ll still be further along than you were yesterday.

PS… my friend is over 70 and still dives every chance he gets.

Very nice message.  We can't accomplish our goals without a little preparation and a lot of patience.

Most things worth attaining weren't gathered easily. It takes time to achieve goals. You certainly won't get there overnight. I try and instill this principle with my girls all the time.

That's so good that you do Nicole Doty - Gilbert Real Estate Expert especially since our youth are growing up in a "gotta have it now" time.

This is such sage advice, Kathy. I had a business coach who maintained (and I agree) that most people set too many/too high short term goals, and too few/too low long term ones. Taking one step each day toward your goal is very wise.

Hi Kathy - That's excellent advice. Intentions are worth nothing if they aren't followed by action.

Dick Greenberg If you can do this, then even if you don't reach your goal or it takes longer than you thought, you'd still be better off and have no regrets for what you didn't try.

What an inspiring story!  I don't make resolutions, but I do need inspiration now and then to keep myself going. The whole baby step thing works and is excellent advice!

I don't make them either Sharon Tara If we use a smaller "ruler" we'd take more steps.

Ok, so I have to tell you, Kathy, that when I hear "baby steps" I immediately think about Bill Murray in "What About Bob?"

Hysterical movie, about who is REALLY mentally fit and not fit.

Good for your friend for keeping his diving dreams alive and taking the steps to get back there!

There definitely has to be a starting point Kathy Streib. I am glad your friend realized that and put one foot in front of the other to get moving toward his goals! It is a WIN-WIN for him and all who love and care for him.

Taking that first step is probably the hardest. It's easy, well not always, to come up with the goals but putting them into action is the bigger challenge. Congrats to your friend! What a profound lesson for us!

Kathy: Just like your friend, I love swimming and do it every chance I have to get exercise. Which is one goal I've set for myself. Another, of course, is business.  There is just so much I want to do in so many directions that it just seems like I'm taking baby steps outwards in 360 degrees. But that's ok.

Good Saturday morning Kathy Streib -

As you can tell I'm playing commenting catch up this morning. We stopped making New Year resolution years ago.  Just something to feel bad about when we screwed up.  Onward and upward is our motto.

Hi Kathy,  Glad to see your friend is doing much better.  I am not sure that a lot of people realize how strenuous diving is.  You really have to be fit.  Hats off to him!  Goals have to be reachable or it makes no sense to try and exceed them.  Have a healthy and successful new year! May all your goals be exceeded.

Not a big fan of new years resolutions, I like to set goals anytime of the year and start working towards them right away instead of waiting for the new year. That way be it business or personal goals you are way ahead of the people just starting on the first. Great tips though to make it a success the entire year, baby steps are easier to reach and you feel the results to keep going!
