She Was Just Being Nice

Reblogger Praful Thakkar

This post from Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland reminded me of one incidence where listing agent lost a buyer for a home!

Is it nice to hand over the keys to someone waiting to show the home?

She Was Just Being Nice

Arriving to show a home (I do occasionally have a buyer) we found the lockbox and the door open. Ringing the bell...there was someone showing the property.

I alerted the other agent that we would wait outside until the buyers were finished. No problem that gave me some extra time to talk with my client and check out the exterior.

When the other agent completed the showing,  the key was  handed to me, saying:

"I left it open to make it easier for you."

She was just being nice!

But..is this nice? Is this professional? Is this protecting the home owner? Is this against everything we know?

It's not about  a lockbox.. it's the way they are used.

I have been known to say:

'It is sometimes better to be nice than right.'

But not in this situation

Good morning Praful. Nice or just rushing to leave? That is the question! Enjoy your day!

Praful Thakkar This is a great re-post and Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland wrote on such a basic subject, but one that can seriously affect us.

I seldom will just hand over the keys.  If it is an agent I work with all the time I will only if it is not electronic

Time are changing and we all must be cognizant of possible poor outcomes.  One must be on his/her 'A' game all the time.  Mark

It's good to be nice - but what if it costs safety of the sellers?

Wayne Martin never thought of 'rushing to leave' idea!

Some agents do that - just want to get over with it! Leave and hand over the keys to someone if around.

And specially when the buyers have disliked the property. 'Who cares now?' is the attitude from a few.

Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI basic subject for sure. Not so basic when it comes to security.

People just take it for granted - the person waiting at the door is another agent. May be true most of the times but what if they are not?

Now if I know the agent and have done business with him/her, possibly, yes.

I remember it created a big issue when I did not allow someone else to show the home at the same time as I was showing.

Appreciate that someone is waiting - however, one needs to go through the standard procedure.

Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland this post makes a point - should we be really nice enough at the cost of security of the seller?
