This Crazy Ugly Color

We were remodeling a condo on the 10 floor on the ocean, that we bought. It wasn’t the time of our remodeling virginity, as we already have completed two projects for investors, but some innocence was still in the air…

We asked the designer to give us the colors for the walls. He said the colors were the last thing you do. He said everything had to be there, the kitchen, the floors, the doors before he would give us the colors.

So, we pretty much got to that point and the designer gave us 3 options for the Living room. I hate swatches, as I can’t figure anything based on this small piece. I thought that if I make larger color samples, it would make picking the color the breeze. So we went to the paint store, bought a quart of each color and I painted strips on the wall floor to ceiling and about a foot and a half wide.

We immediately hated that greyish/greenish color, the first one from the corner. And this hatred was unanimous among the members of the family. We did not like the rest of the colors as well, but at least they were not that hateful…

We asked every contractor walking in the door, every person sticking their nose to look at the progress, and everybody hated that color. We were arguing, we did not know what to do.

One early evening the designer was standing by the door to the bedroom and looking at the ocean. He then pointed to the glass in the door and asked if we noticed the color. And then he pointed to the ocean and said that the colors were very similar. And then he pointed to that hated color, that everybody did not like, and said that it would be absolutely perfect.

I drove to the store and bought this paint. I did not believe our designer for a second, but he was so convinced it would work. Painters put one coat, then another one.

And our jaws dropped. It was beautiful. We started asking everybody, and those, who did not like it when we had it as a sample on the wall, now loved it. Everybody loved the color. It was funny to watch their reaction when they learned that this was that crazy color we all did not like before.

We learned that colors look different during the day, they change with light. And the art of picking the color is when it works in the morning and in the evening. And we learned, that while we could do a lot of things even with design, choosing the right color was out of our league.

Here is the photo, which does not really reflect the right color, but at least it gives the idea:

Oceans Six

I guess that's why the designer is the designer. However... I've seen a lot of magazine photos of "beautiful" rooms that I did NOT like in the least.

Of course, my taste leans more toward rustic - and log cabins! (I wish I had one.)

That's a really nice color.  I've found that paint looks totally different wet and dry and in the day vs. the night and even the smog/clouds/dust in the air can have an impact.

Definitely keeps the ocean motif going.

You are so right about the way colors change depending on the light.

An important lesson to be learned here, Jon.  I know that I would have hated the sample myself.

Jon - The color looks great to me, and you are right that it is difficult to know what it is really going to look like until it is on the wall. The only thing I know about paint is that it always looks darker on the wall than on the swatches.

It is subtle and does not outstage that focal point outdoors. Beautiful.
