Having been an IT project manager for Fortune 100 companies I understand and practice good computer file management.
It is ideal that every file have a proper directory and folder and every file be in the proper place.
The challenge is that there are certain files, across various disks, directories and folders, that I tend to use over and over again. Not client files but those miscellaneous files.
However, it may have been a year or more since I last used that file. Trying to recall where it is stored on my hard drive (SSD disk) can be frustrating.
So I took the easy way out.
I made a folder for “files I often need.”
Every time you use a file and I think “I’m going to need this again,” copy, don’t move, that file to your “often need” folder.
And, it is interesting to see, over time, all the various files I use over and over. Some are image files, some are Excel spreadsheets, pdf files, etc.
BTW, this is much better and safer than littering your desktop with them.
BTW # 2, not all back up programs / practices back up your desk top.
A “files I often need” folder may not be elegant but it sure saves a lot of time.
