CHRISTMAS EVE
Musings by Patricia Feager 12/24/2015
Perhaps what moves me about Christmas is the feeling I get when I reminisce about my first Christmas tree after moving away from my parent’s house. A three room apartment wasn’t much, but I managed to buy a live tree anyways and decorating it was so much fun. The first ornament I ever purchased was an elf. I don’t know why but out of all the ornaments I saw that day, the elf spoke to me in a mischievous way convincing me I had to have him! For years, the little creature with the pointed ears and green suit was the first one I hung on trees every year thereafter…. Elfie doesn’t exist anymore, but I still remember him fondly.
What I remember best about Christmas was waking up to gently fallen fresh snow flakes in Chicago. The window pane was cold but the imprints of snowflakes were so special. Socks. I always wore socks on my feet back then and dressed warmly. I dreamed about making a snowman and making snowballs too. When the snow was deep, I’d make angels in the snow and stare up at the snowflakes falling on my nose and eyelashes. I loved to play with my dog outdoors in the snow. I’ve never seen a dog shiver or complain about the weather, have you?
The sound of children playing in the snow is the most beautiful sound at Christmas time. There was sledding, ice skating, snow ball fights, making igloos and snow forts too. The voices of children - It was a beautiful sound to hear. Catching snowflakes on my hair or snowflakes on tongue was fun. The sound of the wind in winter when it howls is unspeakable! Silence varies in depth.
Stars are prettiest at night in winter when the skies are not cloudy. They seem to poke through the velvet black sky - in the universe there are diamonds and jewels embroidered to perfection! I see a lot of that here in Texas where I don’t get the snow I had in Illinois. But I did get to see stars and the cosmic beauty during my summers in Maine, sitting outside my cabin on Moose Pond when I lived there. I especially loved the shooting stars and the Aurora Boralis!
Bright lights are electrifying! They make my heat beat faster. I’m not crazy about blinking lights but lights that light up everything around it is so beautiful!!! Purple! Green! Red! Pink! Blue! Orange! Yellow! Lights with shades of color changes everything! It's lights that chases away the dullness. There are so many hues, bright tints, shades of the rainbow, colors of the earth in year round seasons. But there's something magical about colored lights at this time of the year and the twinkling of the stars in the sky and how it reflects on people's thoughts.
Christmas is the best time of the year to reminisce. In memory of my parents, I post this video that I know they would enjoy. I do believe that it's snowing in Heaven! I am thankful for the memories.
