Recent Storms Bring Avalanche Warnings on Grand Mesa Dec 2015
Several storms over the last week have dumped a lot of snow on Grand Mesa. While the skiing is great, for both cross country and downhill at Powderhorn Mountain Resort, there is a high risk of avalanche danger in the back country.
The state has issued an avalanche advisory that will remain in place on Grand Mesa until at least noon on Saturday the 26th. The state advises that avalanches could be two to three feet deep, and human triggered slides are highly likely. It's best to stay on the groomed trails and avoid back country travel until the advisory is lifted. You can check conditions here.
Locals have reported new snowfall amounts of up to 4.5 feet on the mesa. That was yesterday and includes snowfall from all of the storms that have passed through this week.
Last night's storm brought a lot more snow to the area with at least six inches of new snow in Cedaredge, and a lot more on top of the mesa. The weather should stabilize and bring clear skies and the settling of this new snow as we head into next week.
