It's official. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Florida made it into the top three states with populations over 20 million people! The population just reached 20,271,272 in 2015. Only California (39,144,818) and Texas (27,469,114) have more people and are at least twice the size of the Sunshine State. What that means for Floridians is that elbow room will soon be a thing of the past! Pretty amazing considering Florida had the smallest population of any southern state up until the middle of the 20th century. Florida added 365,703 residents this past year - the majority of which were relocating here from both inside and outside of the United States. Northern states lead the pack, particularly New York - drawn here by not only beautiful, warm weather but also by lower home prices and no state income tax.
Of the total new residents to Florida this year, 200,000 of them came from other states and 130,000 of them moved from outside the continental U.S. Certainly this is good news for those folks who are looking to sell or rent property, especially this time of year when inventory is down. Hopefully, as Florida makes the top three in population, the infrastructures of the most popular cities will continue to improve to be able to accommodate the growth.
