Malibu Search and Rescue, which Ryan is a part of, is consistently one of the busiest rescue teams in the state with over 120 calls for service each year! This year has been no exception! This year Malibu Search and Rescue has had 130 calls for service, breaking our previous record of 128 calls!! In the past week alone the team has helped with law enforcement operations, searched for a lost hiker, responded to vehicles that have gone over the side of a cliff and searched for a critical missing child in freezing temperatures!
Our record breaking calls #129 and #130, both occurred yesterday. Call #129 came out in the late Monday morning and was a vehicle that had gone about 50-75 feet over the side on Piuma Road, in a spot where this activity is not uncommon. The vehicle landed about 50-75 feet below, perched on some boulders. Had those boulders not been there, it could have been another hundred or more feet down. On this call Ryan responded with the rescue truck, close to a dozen team members, LA County Fire and the California Highway Patrol. We are happy to report that there were no injuries!
Here are some images from the rescue:
This image is from the roadway above the vehicle. You can see the rugged terrain and even the ocean behind the mountains.
This is another area photo from the same spot, again showing the terrain and some remote and exclusive houses in the distance.

Rescue #130 for the year was that afternoon at about 420pm. It was for a young child that had ran off from the house in a remote part of Topanga. Due to terrain, the sparsely populated area and rapidly dropping temperatures, among other concerns, we requested additional assistance from our sister LA County Search and Rescue teams and had a great response. Additional air support was provided by LA Sheriff's Aero Bureau and LAPD's Air Support Division. During this call Ryan was out in the field searching for the missing child utilizing night vision goggles. We are happy to report the child and family were reunited.
Below is a camera shot of the area Ryan was searching with night vision goggles.

KTLA even arrived to cover the story! Ryan was in some crowd shots, but the story didn't air.
