If Your Home Made New Years' Resolutions

Real Estate Agent with Cedar Rapids/Iowa City, IA KW Legacy Group S44645

If your home made New Years' resolutions...here are some things that would be on the list:

1. Save money by making one extra payment per year.  Whether you pay 1/12 of one payment towards the principal each month, or you set up bi-monthly payments for your mortgage (since there are two months with 5 weeks, this will result in an extra payment), you will increase the equity and reduce the interest paid over the life of the loan.

2.  Now is the time to update with more energy efficient windows, HVAC systems or appliances.  Not only will you save on your energy bills, but there are also many rebates available for replacement.  Check out your local utility company websites to see how much you can receive!

3.  Create a rainy day fund for your home.  A special savings account just for the little things that come up in the home that need repair or replacement.  Whether it is your garage door opener, your sump pump, or a leaking faucet, you will be relieved to have the ability to handle whatever comes your way.

4. Take on a new project every year to upgrade or improve the value of your home.  Whether it is landscaping around the deck or patio, building a firepit, replacing all the outdated light fixtures, updating plumbing fixtures, bathroom and kitchen upgrades, or finishing the basement.  Later when you want to sell your home, you will be glad that you did the updating a little at a time to maximize the value!

Or maybe the resolution is to find a newer home that better suits your needs.  Whether you need a larger home for your growing family, or you need to downsize into a smaller home with everything on one level, I am here to help!

Happy New Year!

Nice list Karen. Those things would make our homes a priority.

Debbie Reynolds I think that simply being responsible enough to have a rainy day fund or to make one extra payment per year is a huge plus!  I receive calls too often when something goes wrong in a house and the new owner cannot afford to get it fixed.  That is much too stressful!
