What is your BIG WHY?

By

Why do you get up each day and do what you do?

Is is money? Is it time? Is is family? Is it fame?

My very good friend and Active Rain member Steve Homer asked me this question for the first time when we really started to become good friends.

What a great question and it caught me off guard!

My answer is all four and several others, but mostly to spend more time with the 2  wonderful people in the picture attached to this blog.  family picture

It is amazing how you can have the worst day ever at your office or in the field and when you get to your home base and get a kiss from your husband/wife or that smile from your son/daughter it all seems to melt away.

For example, I watered my yard with my 15 month old "big helper" son today when I got home and completely forgot about the little things that upset me today and affected how the rest of my day played out.

I have to remind myself often to not sweat the small stuff!

I wrote this tonight because I was thinking about what is really important to me and to remind all of us as professionals that in our endless pursuit of happiness--Take a Friday off to take your kids somewhere without them knowing, Get out in the country and see how bright the stars are at night, Tell someone that you love them, Tell someone how much you appreciate them, and remember to smell the flowers!!!

Make sure your are leaving deposits to not only make your business better each day but to all the people that are around you.  We all need good news in a time when it seems that our TVs and radios have a weird way of airing everything that is wrong.  SMILE AND LAUGH TOMORROW MORE THAN NORMAL AND SEE HOW MUCH BETTER YOUR DAY WILL BE!

Very great points that you brought up there Justin.  Some time things at work should be left there.  No reason to bring it home with you!

I just plain out enjoy what I do. Yes all jobs are frustrating and stressing. But if you enjoy it then its a little easier to take on a great attitude for it. I tell people all the time that I will screw something up. Its the measure of how I fix it!

Great post Justin (and thanks for mentioning me)!  We have to have that BIG WHY to get us through the tough times, and in any business there are always tough times.  It goes back to what many of us learned in sports when we were coming up: focus on the fundamentals!  Do them better than your competition and you will be a survivor.  I wrote a post not too long ago on the subject of being a SURVIVOR and it really holds true that you must keep the main thing, the main thing; however, that also means that we need balance in our lives.  You need that watering time in the yard with the kids, just like you must spend time generating the rain for the business too.

Good to have you "In The Rain" my friend!  Welcome and happy blogging!  Steve

Justin,  the anticipation of how God will use my life intrigues me every day.  I wake up excited to embrace each day no matter what it entails.  If it's been a tough few days or months I'm always expecting that "this too shall pass."  If it's been days of greatness I'm just thankful that I had a chance to participate.  I live each day with the understanding that "This is the day that the Lord has made and I will rejoice and be glad in it."  I'm just happy to be alive and being used by God to encourage others.  Thanks for the post.
