Danbury is home to Western Connecticut State University. It was founded in 1903 as a teachers college and is part of the Connecticut State University System. It has about 6,500 students. There are two campuses, the midtown campus on White Street and the large campus off of Mill Plain Road, appropriately three miles apart. Naugatuck Valley Community College opened a satelittle campus in the city center in 2009, and is currently expanding space in downtown.
Most of the student body appears to be coming from the local area of CT or the nearby bedroom communities in New York State. In terms of housing, many students are commuters. In the area around the midtown campus of Western Connecticut, there are a lot of small apartments houses which the owners themselves tend to rent out own their own. A few years ago, a student only apartment community was constructed a few blocks away from the downtown campus. Also in terms of housing, I am not aware of any academic year rentals offered out through the Multiple Listing Service. If you are a full time stduent and are looking to live off-campus, landlords typically require a cosigner with excellent credit and income to support the rent. Landlords often do not want too many cars, if people drive, especially in condos where residents are not supposed to be parking in visitor spots regularly or in multi phase homes where parking may be already tight and they do not want to disturb the current tenants.
There are occasional events at the college which the general community is invited to. The western campus has the Oneil center where there are occasional indoor concerts and shows. Durning the summer months, there are usually a few outdoor concerts at the Charles Ives Concert Park, also located on the western campus.
Across from the midtown campus, there is a relatively new Italian Restaurant (SoHo pizza) which is very good. Connected to SoHo pizza is Double Twister Ice Cream, for a treat after pizza or for any time. There is plenty of parking.
