Are You Present In The Conversation?

Are you present in the conversation? What message does your inattentiveness give to others?

Are you present in the Conversation?

We need to be more intentional about showing others that we value the conversation.

Here are some tips that add value in our conversations:

1. Do not text or check emails during the conversation.

2. Do not look around the room or out the window.

3. Do not have a one way conversation, don't preach.

4. Do not abruptly change the subject.

5. Do not talk over them, LISTEN.

6.  Do ask questions to help clarify and understand their point.

7. Do let them finish their own sentences.

8. Do show compassion when it is obvious they are hurting.

9. Do listen to their heart.

10. Do be on time for your meeting.

In our business and personal conversations much good can come from being present in the conversation.

Oh I wish I could give your list to my neighbor. As a retired history teacher, he does love to preach to his audience, and he does love to talk right over anyone else who tries to add to a "conversation."

Somehow... I don't really call it a conversation.

I have noticed that one of my good friends has a very selfish way of talking in a conversation--esp with a small group of pp.  If someone starts to make a comment, he immediately starts talking with his own comments and doesn't really pay attention to anyone else that tries to chime in.  It is so annoying. And of course --I've seen the same guy start checking his phone if others are talking about something that doesn't appeal to him.

Good post! As my Broker advised when I first got in the business, ask a question and then be quiet and listen.

Marte Cliff , we all have those people who do not understand the meaning of conversation. They are frustrated preachers.

Thanks for your comments and hope things get better with the neighbor.

Mary Hutchison, SRES, ABR , I know it is hard to control our actions when others control a conversation. I try to take those experiences and remind myself NEVER to be like them.

Thanks

I occasionally have friends that drop in.  I always excuse myself and let them know that I have a few things to follow up on before I can visit.  They usually follow me to my office and continue to talk- which is fine with me and they get it.  I am an agent and this is how I make a living.  I do have one friend that this annoys- to which I tell her we can meet up for lunch out and at a scheduled time-no more drop in from her!  lol

Shanna Hall , unscheduled "visits" can be another situation. Letting others know you have business to conduct is appropriate and I don't think that means you are not present in the conversation. Sorry that some don't understand and don't appreciate your time.

Just good business manners that need to be practiced more often. I don't think people know how truly rude they are being.

Lyn We live in a culture that is so tied to electronic devices that they are not aware that they are being rude.

Bringing you Home!

Was just discussing this with my assistant on Friday. I cannot believe how often I walk in to an open house, and the hosting agent is on his/her screen instead of engaging with the customer in front of him/her.

Liane Thomas - Corona & Riverside Real Estate , I too am amazed at how absent agents can be from the consumer they are working with.

I hope we are reminded not to be like them.

Thanks for your participation.

Eye Contact.  I had a great meeting today with some one.  (Honestly I was a little tired) but kept my eye contact and asked questions.  And honestly I learned a lot from him.

Gene, that is a great point to add. Eye contact helps to be present in the conversation. Thanks
