Hate Mongers!

Mike writes: "Borino, I've been door knocking expireds for 2 days now and have had mixed results.  I had a guy give me a quasi-listing appt for February and I had a guy who's going to let me do a CMA on his expired listing.  That's the good news, the bad news is I don't know how to deal with the vicious, mean-spirited hate mongers who bite my head off.  How do you deal with them?"

Good start, Mike! Good to see you out there hustling — that’s what it takes.

Well, there will always be a small group of folks who will be angry, emotional, and mean. And not just expireds. See, to you and I all this stuff is familiar. We deal with it every day.

meanBut these people much of it is new. It’s unpleasant and scary. Listing a house, having strangers wandering through every day… Dealing with paperwork, and agents, and repairs, and moving… It’s all very stressful for them. Plus, we as agents don’t have the best reputation out there and home owners don’t know whom to trust and where to turn to for some honest advice.

So knowing all that…. How do you handle mean people? It requires skill, time, and patience.

Some sellers will eventually turn around and see that you’re just a hard-working guy trying help (and put food on the table).

Then there are some people who are just rude. Angry. Bitter. Maybe just today. Maybe a rough day at work. Little Jimmy got in trouble at school. Whatever...

And there are some people who go through life pissed off. At everything and at everybody.

How can you tell who is who? Sometimes you can. And if you’re dealing with a genuine asshole, time to move on. Don’t waste to your time with these life-juice vampires.

And sometimes all it takes is to say: “I’m sorry, I must have said something to upset you, did I?”

Often little compassion, patience and human kindness goes a long way.

You see, negative emotions are part of this business. No way around it. You have to have at least some layer of thick skin to make it as an agent.

And you have to be able to put up with some people and their drama. Your job is to be their guide, even if they go through some emotional storms.

Got a door slammed in your face? It happens here and there. You dust yourself off, take a deep breath…Smile and off you go to the next one. That’s the secret. Keep going because you will discover that for every angry and unpleasant Grinch there are tons of nice, friendly folks who welcome your desire to help them.

And they will pay you well for your service.

Great words of advice or become an auto sales person before becoming a Realtor. Also before going out knocking on the door think how you would react.

Great advice.  In order to pick myself up quicker, I empathize with the other person as there must be something else going on to cause their unhappiness.
