ActiveRain is NOT just another Listing Dumping Ground!

Real Estate Agent with Fathom Realty West Sound WA State 52404

A brief visit to the Blog Home Page here on ActiveRain, and you'd think I had landed on Zillow or®

The steady stream of AR members promoting their listings seemed endless, with an occasional post of meaningful, engaging content being a somewhat rare exception.

Consumers and potential clients have a plethora of listing aggregate sites and home search platforms to choose from. Add to that the growing tide of Mobile search apps, which are all the rage these days, makes the chances of them finding your listing here all the more challenging.

Understand that I am not being critical of using ActiveRain to promote properties for sale. I, myself, use ActiveRain as one of many marketing components to achieve a strong Internet presence for my listings, and garner greater exposure for my Sellers.

However, listings are a very limited exception to the overall content I generate here. Consumers access a gazillion websites to find their next home, many that offer way more navigation features, bells, and whistles than you can shake a stick at!

The Million Dollar questions you need to ask yourself are this:

"What content can I create, what information can I share, that consumers can't find elsewhere?"

"What information can I share that would be most helpful, engaging, and valuable to their process?"

Let's face it, we're creatures of habit. We feel compelled to plaster/promote our names, our pictures, our brands, and our listings on every conceivable venue known to mankind. No vertical surface is safe!

And so it is that we jump onto a platform like ActiveRain and employ the same learned habits and practices we've always used before.

What kind of content is going to effectively attract potential clients and keep them engaged? If all they find is an endless blog-roll of listings and blatant self-promotional propaganda, you can bet they will immediately click on through to find something (or someone) of greater value.

Consistent, quality, relevant, hyper-local, geo-targeted CONTENT IS STILL KING!

Richard Bazinet /MBA - I couldn't agree with you more! Creating content for consumers is one primary aspect of this platform, but you touch on several others - networking, building referrals partnerships, gaining knowledge and expertise from other professionals...

Thanks for adding to the conversation!

Kat Palmiotti - I always LOVE seeing your smiling face pop up in my comments!

Promoting Open Houses is another one of my pet peeves. Not only here on AR, but on Facebook as well. Although you could argue, promoting an Open House on your FB personal profile makes some degree of sense. But to post them in places where those who see it have little to no chance of attending seems like a waste of time to me.

But again, my point in all this was to simply encourage members to write content for consumers, to generate information that THEY want & need.

Thank you for your awesome comment!

Agreed. There are types that use AR as a different type of MLS & in my area they are up in the ranks as far as points too. That's all they post - I don't know if they know somethiing I don't or just don't know the value of AR.

I've stopped letting it worry me but it sure is noticeable sometimes on the blog roll.

You actually get great traction if you post a listing here & then on G+. My goal is to get my face/post/page in front of the Z,T on Google for that property.

Some agents post the same listing over and over and over again. Not only does this create a false impression of production ("Oh look, Suzy Agent has another new listing!" ... "No, that's the same one from last week."), but I've seen several times where the listing has been under contract for weeks.

Rich, you have hit a nerve in the community. That is good as there is a dialog taking place and that is good. I believe your point is that there needs to be a good balance in our postings. When one agent posts listing after listing they are not contributing value to the community.

Thanks for stimulating us today.

Yes, it is much more than a listing marketing platform.  Sure it can do that, but that is not what it is about.  This is where I come to grow.

Featuring a listing is only a fraction of what I blog about. Great content is what I strive for and enjoy reading here in the Rain.

You have a great point, it is not all about listings on ActiveRain, or about market reports, which is what I write way to often.

Can anyone share some viable statistical data on how promoting your listings here on AR has led to closed transactions? I see the comments where listings get lots of 'views,' but that's not an accurate indication that posting them here leads to consumer leads.

rare for me to re-blog, but your observation and the first comment on the blog being from Bob Stewart  prompted me to re-blog with my take on the post.

What sets me apart, will set you apart.

Frankly, I don't expect any business to come directly my way via AR. While I do post occasionally a listing here, I post about once a month some original content. I joined AR in 2006 and, after a few years of absence, I've become more active again. This is still a good place to find interesting people and some original thinking.

Rich Jacobson the listing posted on ActiveRain does get great Google Juice for sure. (I do get an email from Google alerts when I post listing here!)

However, if it is just listings that one promotes here, they are missing a big opportunity to get the best from this platform for sure.

You said it right - it's not listing dumping ground! Share something more meaningful and useful to consumers.

The problem is I know of two sites that will publish your listing (for a fee) to 50+ sites and AR is one that they include in their image of sites they post to.  Until those get shut down, we'll continue to be a dumping ground... and I doubt AR is going to do that since they probably get $$ from them.

Personally, I like the listings.  I've seen some that are amazing in other parts of the country and anything that sends juice to my website is good by me.

I personally see nothing wrong posting new listings hopefully for the group.

Other agents have a chance to see what is posted.

I do support their right to post as many listings as they want to, but personally I like to mix it up with enough variety to not bore either my readers or myself.
