ASK AN AMBASSADOR: Your Honor, They Put The Evidence Right There In Plain Sight!
Another one of a host of great blogs under the "Ask an Ambassador" tag that team Bliz put out weekly. I like this one a lot, because it's something I continually wish more people would realize. What we wrote in a short moment of thought may not be who we are - but readers don't know that. What you write becomes who you are. Snarky? That's you. Negative? You wear the badge. Positive, uplifting, informative? That's more like it!
Even worse, as Bliz points out, as soon as you hit "send", "update status", or anything similar, you're incriminating yourself, whether you realize it or not.
Before you put something into the interwebs, take a breath, and be sure whatever you're putting out there is representative of who you are, and more importantly, how you'd like to be seen.
ASK AN AMBASSADOR: Your Honor, They Put The Evidence Right There In Plain Sight!
Blog posts. Comments. Facebook. Twitter. Instagram. And 1000 other places we ply our trade on the Internet.
We in the business leave a trail all over the Internet in an effort to be found by potential clients.
But that exposure? It's a double edged sword. We can leave a nice impression that attracts people to us OR we can leave a trail like Pigpen from the Peanuts, giving people an impression that just isn't good for our business.
It's been said before and it'll be said 1000 times more: "What we post is out of our control once we hit submit". There's a host of celebrities, athletes, politicians and regular folks that have had their lives wrecked because of a few seconds of indiscretion.
"But I was in a CLOSED group!"
"The post was MEMBERS ONLY!"
Yeah, and none of that means a thing. Screen capture software makes it easy, or for that matter point the smartphone at the screen and click and BAM, you have just lost all control of where that message may next appear. Deleting it doesn't stop that train from rolling right over you.
And we see it here and elsewhere, agents putting the evidence right in plain sight.
Discussing commissions and thinking that calling it by a "code name" will get them off the hook.
Stating they violate state licensing law or aren't adhering to their fiduciary responsibilities.
And all it takes is ONE person in the right place to read what you've done and then the serious trouble starts. If you're lucky, maybe it just stops with your broker.
Protect your reputation, be careful with what you post, no matter where it is. It's hard to argue with something you typed when it's put right in front of you later.
Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help!
